The face of EC in Kenya
Susan Enoch, a recipient of EC's scholarship program, has been hired as our first Kenyan employee! As our Program Coordinator, Susan is responsible for meeting with teachers and students involved in the Orphan Feeding Program, purchasing and supplying the food for that program, maintaining records and finding new sources of funding in Kenya. She is also EC’s representative on the new Health Center Board for the building of a clinic in Lanet Umoja. It’s an exciting position for her and an exciting time for us as we continue moving forward in Kenya!

Water comes to Kampi Ya Moto (Camp of Fire)
Since 2008, EC has been trying to bring potable drinking water to the Lord Ranjuera School in Kampi Ya Moto - a semi-arid region of Kenya that translates into "Camp of Fire". Last year EC partnered with CBN and Living Waters International to install a rainwater harvesting system for the school.

As a result, the students and teachers now have plenty of drinking water, and they’ve even started a garden. The desert blooms!

What’s the next big thing?
The next project will be the construction of two classrooms to provide adequate space for the 7th and 8th graders at this primary school in Kampi Ya Moto. Currently these students are sharing desks and books with each other in a small administration block that doubles as their classroom.

One Woman's Dream
What started as an idea for a small outpatient clinic with a pharmacy in Lanet Umoja has now blossomed into a vision for a government backed, fully equipped health care facility with inpatient care. Lynn Mason toured Kenya with EC in 2012 and returned to Vermont with a dream of building a much needed medical clinic in this growing community. As President of the Waterbury Vermont Rotary Club, Lynn spent her year in office helping to raise funds for the clinic. Her initiative sparked the initial endeavor that has developed into the vision for the future Lanet Umoja Health Center.

A Common Goal
This May, Ruth Young, Ed.D, Executive Director of EC traveled to Kenya with EC board member Rev. William Stewart to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lanet Umoja Health Center. The two of them met Nakuru County’s Deputy Governor Joseph Ruto at the ceremony and were encouraged to learn of the government’s interest in and support for what has now become a collaborative vision for bringing health care to the village of Lanet Umoja.

2nd Annual Walk for Water
EC’s second Annual Walk for Water took place in Waterbury, VT on June 8th this year. More than 30 people came out to enjoy a 3-mile walk to the Winooski River, simulating the walk that many children take each day in Kenya just to have drinking water. The water there is usually contaminated, resulting in life threatening water-borne illnesses. Supporters helped to raise over $1,000.00 for the new Health Center in Lanet.

Joining us that day were EC Board members and Lanet Umoja’s Chief of Police, Francis Kariuki, who was on business in the USA – bringing an element of authenticity to this annual event.

Connecting Kids
For the past four years, middle school students at Lanet Umoja Primary School in Kenya have been connecting with their peers at Crossett Brook Middle School in central Vermont through "Messages of Mercy" - the writing program that allows kids to learn what life is like in another country.
|
|

More Connections
This October, Ruth visited The Park School of Buffalo in NY (her alma mater), where she presented the vision for Everyone's Child and offered freshmen in a service learning class an opportunity to connect with their Kenyan peers.
