In today’s Gospel (Mark 2:23–28), Jesus and his disciples pick heads of grain as they walk through a field on the Sabbath and are criticized for breaking the Sabbath. In the end, Jesus’ response is, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
Perhaps on this Tuesday, it is a good time for us to examine our use of Sunday. How did I spend this past Sunday? How will I spend next Sunday? God did create Sunday for us to be a day of rest, to be a day of prayer and thanksgiving, to be a day of family.
This is a time when we recognize the need for our faith to be increased, for our family ties to be strengthened, and our need to return thanks to God. If we spend Sunday in the spirit in which it was made for us, we will better recognize that our Father is a loving Father who truly is here for us.
We can learn from the balance of St. Dominic. He gave his days to his neighbor and his night’s to God. May we learn to use Sunday in a way that brings glory to God and strengthen our families.
St. Dominic, Shining as the sun in the temple of God, Pray for us.
