Chiropractic Care for Migraines, Tension Headache and Jaw Pain!

A Word from Dr. David Ginsberg, Chiropractor

Migraine sufferers have to endure a pain that is recurring, severe and can last up to 72 hours. Warning signs such as an “aura," a type of visual disturbance, and nausea sometimes accompany migraines.

Many sufferers find that conventional medicine and prescription drugs offer little relief from their condition, and many are turning to alternative methods of treatment in order to manage the pain. One such alternative is chiropractic treatment.

A holistic approach to pain relief, chiropractic treatment focuses on aiding numerous health issues through massage, spinal manipulation and adjustment of the body’s soft tissues and joints, predominantly in the back. Recent studies, such as that by Bryans (2011), have concluded that chiropractic care can mitigrate migraines and cerviocogenic headaches.

Dr. David Ginsberg has been in Geneva specializing in chiropractic care for children and adults since 1994. He has postgraduate training and holds advanced certificates in pediatrics, pregnancy and posture exercise rehabilitation. Dr. Ginsberg served as the 2010 team chiropractor for the Chicago Slaughter Professional Indoor Football team, and is an injury consultant for St. Charles Gymnastics Academy, Cheer Alliance St. Charles and Eclipse Select West traveling soccer club.  To learn more about chiropractic care and Dr. Ginsberg, see http://kidchiro.com  and http://geneva-chiropractor.com.

The Mouth is the Window to the Soul…

Or at least your health. More and more people are entrusting their dentists with the responsibility of identifying potential health issues in advance. Good dentists are aware of the fact that, in addition to that beautiful smile, your mouth can hold the key to many other issues in your body before they become apparent to you.

Inflammation of the gums, or periodontal disease, can be an indication of diabetes. Often, halitosis is a symptom here, as the high levels of sugar associated with diabetes create a metabolic imbalance in the bloodstream that can be lead to bad breath. Heart disease can also be at the root of a problem within your mouth. Where periodontal disease in the mouth is severe, there can be many underlying effects. When treated, the risk of heart disease decreases dramatically. Even more severe issues such as osteoporosis, dementia, and acid reflux disease can be potentially diagnosed through the mouth.

Not all discoveries of the mouth are negative. Dr. Arnold has seen situations where the redness of a patient's gums provided a clue that she was pregnant!

Regular visits to Dr. Arnold are important to your overall health, not just that perfect smile. Open wide, and let him help ensure your whole body health.  Say "aaahhhhh"!

Animal Teeth Trivia!

Snails are famous for their number one accessory. Rarely seen without it, the shell of a snail provides the perfect shelter and protection from outside predators. One fact that may surprise you to know is that most often, snails actually have far more teeth than the predators they hide from. These are not teeth in the traditional sense, but rather ridges that they scrape against leaves and other vegetation. Snails have as many as 2,500 of these "teeth" on their tongues that gradually wear away, similar to the teeth replacement of a shark. Lucky for us, snail teeth are not built for the same tearing of meat, but are, instead, specialized for their vegetarian diet.

Dr. Arnold's Top Tips

Here are some more of your favorite Facebook tips from Dr. Arnold's daily posts.  Enjoy!

KEEP YOUR EYES ON CARROTS
Can a carrot a day keep the doctor away? The eye doctor, quite possibly. Among many other health benefits, carrots are good for your eyes. Carrots are a rich source of beta-carotene. When converted to vitamin A in the body, this nutrient helps to maintain proper vision, especially in low light. This includes adjusting to night vision, too. Along with carrots, other rich food sources of beta-carotene include dark red, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, pumpkin, red bell pepper and mango.

LACK OF SLEEP INCREASES HUNGER
Did you know that lack of sleep can affect your hunger and appetite? A recent study found that when participants slept only four hours a night they had lower levels of the hormone leptin than when they slept a full 10 hours. Leptin is a hormone that reduces hunger. Lack of sleep also caused the hormone that stimulates appetite to increase. So get enough shut-eye -- it could play an important role in helping you manage your weight!

EXTREME HEAT--WHAT TO DRINK
It's important to drink water during times of heat and activity. However, if you are an athlete doing prolonged, intense exercise and gulping down lots of water, there is another risk to consider. Hyponatremia is a condition that occurs when the sodium in your body becomes too low. This can occur by drinking too much water during an endurance sport. Warning signs include nausea, muscle cramps, slurred speech, and confusion. For high-energy or prolonged athletic events, a sports drink, which replaces sodium and other electrolytes, is a better choice than plain water. If, however, you are just out for a 20- to 30-minute walk, water is best.
