Musculoskeletal Programme update

ESCAPE-pain

The Health Innovation Network launch of the ESCAPE-pain website at the ‘Great ESCAPE’ event in November was a huge success with health and care professionals from across not only the London health and care economy taking part, but participants from across the country.  If you were unable to make the event, you can request further information from their website

Success of the programme has been published on the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists website and is also featured in today’s edition of Frontline magazine, CSP members can log in here to download a PDF copy.

Our MSK team, led by Andrea Carter and Dr Mike Hurley, has worked with clinical colleagues across South London and the ESCAPE-pain programme is now offered by a number of physiotherapy services in South London including Lewisham Hospital, Dulwich Hospital, and Queen Mary’s Hospital.

In an exciting new direction for the Programme, the team are now also liaising with a number of local leisure providers who are keen to run the programme in the community. For further information please contact Andrea Carter.

MSK education

In other work, the team is working to spread the adoption of the RCGP-accredited ‘Core skills in musculoskeletal care’ to GPs; the course is proving very popular and welcomed by participants. The education material has been developed by Arthritis Care in conjunction with the Royal College of GPs and focuses on the core information needed during a typical 10-minute MSK related consultation.

In February the team will begin exploring ways to deliver brief training and consistent messages about joint pain to primary care staff, including practice nurses and pharmacists. A training course designed by Arthritis Care and Keele University will be piloted and the team are looking for other ways of getting key information to these staff groups. If you are interested in participating in this work please contact  Anita Logendra

Osteoarthritis advisor

A pilot has commenced in Lewisham, offering General Practice patients access to an osteoarthritis advisor who will give advice on joint pain management, including self-management and signposting to other services. The role which is also providing support to the local primary healthcare team by offering education and training is being formally evaluated and we are looking for further sites to test this innovative model of care. For further information please contact Andrew Walker

Stories Behind the Bottle - Film Competition

This week sees the launch of "Stories Behind the Bottle", a film competition with a difference. Health Innovation Network is encouraging local universities and service users to come together to make short films about alcohol.  The aim of the films is to dispel some of the myths about people who misuse alcohol, challenge stigma, and show the human stories of those using NHS services.  The competition fits within our alcohol programme, and we plan to incorporate the films into future training for staff.  The winners will be announced in September, and we look forward to sharing the films with you.
