The Eiger, Bargain Bin, and happy owners ...

Hi Galibier fan, in this newsletter:

Eiger development is picking up momentum.

The control cavity electronics and mechanics have changed significantly since the photo was taken, but this view gives you a general look and feel for the final product.

Owners of all Galibier turntables (of any generation) should note that the Eiger's single chassis design is teaching us things that will filter back into upgrades for your turntable, so watch for updates in future newsletters.

One likely change to the round of controllers we released in 2014 points towards improved noise floor performance.  The change?  A low mass pulley (field retrofit).  More on this when we test.

We've demonstrated that the main vibration loop consists of the motor, chassis, bearing and platter.  In this single-chassis architecture, the belt mitigates very little noise.  This has huge implications.  Stay tuned …

Here are some of the key elements of the design:
  • The sliding armboard architecture from the Mk-II versions of the Gavia and Stelvio will be employed, as it has proven itself to be dramatically superior articulated armboards in every way.
  • The motor and drive electronics are based on the new motor controller design.
  • The platter will be slightly shorter than the Gavia platter which is shown in the photo.  The Gavia platter (along with a Serac platter) are being used during early prototyping and mass experiments.  Platter prototyping has not yet begun.
  • The shape of the base will resemble the photo, but you can expect some minor tweaking of the angles and dimensions.
  • The layout of base's 3 tip toes will fit on a standard rack shelf, and the projected weight of the entire turntable is 50 Lbs. (23 Kg).
  • Base material combinations have not yet been finalized.  In this stage of development, MDF has been used due to the familiarity we have with MDF's properties from Serac development.
I've learned long ago that patience is your best friend, and that you need to let the solution come to you instead of forcing it.  I've observed a common trait amongst masters across a broad range of endeavors.  They possess a quiet confidence and patience - letting the process work for them, and knowing that the solution will reveal itself when "it" is ready and no sooner.

We're getting close …

This might well be best exemplified in what I've come to refer to as the "pie principle" as explained in this 1:00 video from the movie Men in Black III:

Bargain Bin.

What our happy customers are saying:

"IMO, the motor controller upgrade is a significantly greater leap than from version I to version II of the Stelvio and almost begs for a public product re-launch."

"I would venture to say that you got things right with this new motor arrangement. I find that the speed is spot on, and there is no belt slippage with the Mylar belt during start up or record dusting....it just chugs along. I also appreciate the controls better, as the old ones were adequate, but more cumbersome to use than these. Very well done Thom, I think you got a motor system that you will not have to change for a long, long time."

"God, you lost a fortune getting this upgrade to me, but I do appreciate it.
Revelation? Hell, I don't know.....but it sounds great.
Got a lot of records I need to play now, and listen to again. "

"I love the sound of the new controller. At first it sounded a bit "thin" or recessed in the midrange but I now attribute this to the extension of the highs. Much more depth for sure and better bass. "

"I installed the new motor in 15 minutes. I listened twice with it & found it was much quieter. I noticed it immediately. It could be my imagination but the background became blacker. The bass also changed.  I don't know how you engineered this for such a small amount of cabbage."
