New Year, New Class Structure
|
|
“No matter how busy a work schedule I have, or how bad my work day may have been, a child’s smile and humor will brighten my day,” stated Brian Boyd, a mentor and an avid class attendee.
Starting in January, TRUE Mentors will be holding three week enrichment clubs which will change every month.

Each month kids can choose from two different clubs that are offered such as art, computers, cooking, comic book writing, science and engineering, and more. In between the sessions, there will be field trips planned to local businesses and locations in Hoboken. TRUE Mentors is hoping the format changes will allow for more in-depth development of skills and passions, as well as engaging students of different ages depending on their interests.
Azriel, 15, who has attended classes for the past three years, is very excited about the changes. “Kids like certain things. Instead of classes being random, kids can choose what they like. The clubs will be helpful to teach kids about what they like and don’t like and give chances to learn something new.”
Boyd went on to say that, “I have really enjoyed getting to know the kids and the other volunteers at the classes and look forward to 2015.”
If you're looking to get involved right in Hoboken, come to a class and see what the excitement is all about! Please see www.TRUEMentors.org for more information.

Q: Why and how did you and your children get involved with TRUE Mentors? Why would you recommend others also get involved?
A: Beyonce (my daughter) was attending the Boys & Girls Club back in 2011 when TRUE mentors started. Miss Yvette, who works at the Boys & Girls Club and is a childhood friend of mine, introduced me to Susi. They both recommended the mentoring program for my daughter. My child is a product of the program, I'm so grateful for the program and that is why I volunteer to get other families involved.
I highly recommend the program to other parents. Beyonce is my youngest daughter; she is 10 years younger than her older sister so she is like an only child. Growing up, she needed someone to hear her out, to talk to, someone who she would enjoy being with, someone to express herself to, that wasn't a mom or sister. She needed someone she was going to open up to, who wasn't going to try to correct her or discipline her. That is what I was looking for and that is what we found with TRUE Mentors. I think that TRUE Mentors shows kids not what is right in front of them, but what is beyond. These mentors are often successful and have finished college; the mentors can help show our kids that they can be more.
