Governor Shumlin expected to call for increase in Medicaid reimbursements

Governor Peter Shumlin was sworn into office for a third term Thursday, Jan. 8th.  In his inaugural address he mainly focused on energy and environmental issues, however he is expected to quickly pivot to health care.

Gov. Shumlin will deliver a budget address Thursday, Jan. 15. In that speech he is expected to propose an increase in Medicaid reimbursement rates as part of an effort to eliminate the cost shift.  Medicaid reimburses physicians at much lower levels than Medicare or private insurance plans - often paying providers less than what the services actually cost to deliver - forcing providers to make up the difference by negotiating better reimbursement rates with private insurance plans.

“The Vermont Medical Society will work closely with the administration to make sure that not only is this done right, but that it is done for the long term,” said Pail Harrington, executive vice president of VMS.

VMS will update its members on this issue as soon as more information is known.
