JANUARY NEWSLETTER
2014 was another good year for the FOGBEES.  To kick off the riding year, Demetrius and his EMT buddies presented a bike safety class instructing all on what to do in case of a serious accident. Even our most experience veterans came away with new knowledge that could save friends from a crippling injury. It was a class that every bicyclist should have attended.
We had daily group rides (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday),  FOGBEE Spin, Halloween Party, two over-night tours, RAGBRAI, and Yellowstone Tours. FOGBEE leaders made Channel 5 TV and Channel 4 TV News three times this year with important advocacy actions for the bicycling community.
The new ROTten (Retired Old Turtle) Group has been active with morning and mid-day rides.  They typically end their rides with an ice-cream sandwich and a nap.  They even have their own FACEBOOK Group with 75 ROTTEN members (or would like to be ROTTEN, but that takes a lot of ripening).  CLICK HERE.
We ended the year with another great Christmas Lights Ride and with our membership at 146.
With its monthly Newsletter the FOGBEES are unique among bicycle clubs. In 2014 the newsletter received contributions from nearly a dozen members and had over 60% reading it.  Two FOGBEES also write bicycle columns for community magazines.
You probably have something that would interest other members or the community.  Please share it with an article for either the newsletter or one of the community magazines.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

Membership with the FOGBEES is free (we have no dues), but once a year we update our rosters to make sure we have correct contact information for all our active members. We use our MailChimp subscription list for that task.
If you have been opening the newsletter on a regular basis as HTML (default) with images enabled, MailChimp has "logged you in" and you have nothing more to do.  If you chose to read it as TEXT (very bad choice) or block email graphics (also not a good idea), you will not show up on our records and you need to contact us.
We have sent an email to thirteen (13) accounts that we plan to delete.  [Twenty- nine (29) notes went out and sixteen (16) said "don't delete me].  Some are for people we know are active, but suspect we have an obsolete email address.  We plan to delete that address.
We will also delete those addresses from blog privileges.

SPINNING AT THE Y

By Spinmaster Gary
Fogbee Spinning at the Y is now in its 7'th year. In the above picture FOGmaster Gary asked "Who likes spin? Raise your hand." No, it wasn't a raid.
You can join every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 pm and, if the weather outside is frightful, on Saturdays at 10 am.  In 2014 the Y has waived the registration fee and Fogbees can join for 3 months. Check with Gary for the 2015 arrangements.
SUPERBOWL 2015 PARTY
Per FOGBEE tradition we will again have our annual super-bowl party on Sunday February 1'st.  The game starts at 5:30PM CST
The party starts at 4:30PM.  Arrive in time at the home of Tom and Sharyn Evans to select squares on our game board or to place a friendly wager with other party members.  If you don't know where we live, we'll give you directions when you RSVP.  Just remind me.
Bring your favorite "significant other," an appetizer, snack, or desert along with your favorite libation for during the game grazing.  Sharyn will provide a sandwich dinner at half-time and soft drinks during the game.
This year we are also indebted to Depews and Shumakers who are sharing in the preparation for the big game.

Please RSVP by noon Jan 31'st (at TnBikeTom@gmail.com)
so we prepare plenty for all to eat.

NASHVILLE TO NEWARK IN 2015
By Aussie Bob
In brief: 1,000 miles over three weeks from mid-May 2015, with SAG support, comprising a small group of convivial riders who are past the first bloom of youth.
The ride has been designed to be a 'gentleman's tour', in that there will be no camping, daily distances will be moderate (averaging a little over 54 miles), hill-climbing will not be overly daunting (averaging 2,500 feet), rest days will be frequent and prospects for avoiding the heat will be enhanced by taking a northerly direction as the season becomes warmer. Any suggestions to improve these aspects of the tour will be gladly received.
An indicative planning spreadsheet is included here for ease of reference, showing links to the Ride with GPS material etc for each day's ride. If you are interested contact Bruce Day.

BAMBOO BIKE
By Ed Thomas

When I was in Glacier National Park in August, I ran across a lady preparing to ride the Going To The Sun Road from the Eastern entry.  At
first glance, her bike was quite impressive so I asked her about it.  Turns out it is made from bamboo and this is not a new innovation.  Apparently the first bamboo bike was patented and introduced at the  London Stanly Show in 1894.  Research has revealed some interesting facts about bamboo:
  • Outer most fibers of thin bamboo have tensile strength greater than steel and 8 times greater than wood
  • Bamboo is very stiff
  • Bamboo has great vibration damping characteristics and reportedly is more comfortable to ride than a carbon bike
Bamboo bikes are usually custom made and they are not cheap.  The lady I met was riding a Calfee, but there are other manufacturers online.

HISTORY OF THE FOGBEES
By Tom Evans

Frequently, someone wants to know how the FOGBEES got started.  Being the second eldest living FOGBEE, I thought it be proper for me to relate our history. CLICK HERE for the story.
BIKE COLUMN IN LOCAL MAGAZINE

We write a monthly bicycle column in a community magazine.  It is usually about some FOGBEE activity.  We have uploaded copies of these columns to the FOGBEE Google Drive account.  Below is a list of those columns with a brief description along with links so you can read the article.  We are always open to ideas (and volunteers for our next article.  Please send suggestions to FOGBEE@gmail.com.
Our February topic is the Ironman and Haley Peel.  The March topic is Mountain Biking and Brian Wray.
