SFY is preparing for a busy year of Policing the Teen Brain trainings in the California cities of Fresno, Los Angeles, Richmond, Sacramento, in counties across Indiana, and in Virginia Beach and Charlottesville, VA. We’re also hard at work replicating Juvenile Justice Jeopardy in these cities among others.
Good News
At SFY, we are thrilled to report real success in bringing these principles to bear on police interactions with youth and their families.
On the East Coast
The Virginia Beach (VA) Police Department has developed an app (Youth and Community Groups) that officers can use to guide families and youth to appropriate local services, before a crisis occurs.
According to the VBPD Training Bulletin, “Traditionally we have engaged juveniles in times of crisis, which usually resulted in a referral or arrest. There has been a recent trend to address juvenile and family problems before they rise to the level of criminality. The Police Department is taking the initiative to assist those who find themselves in need of services. Officers now have another intervention tool available to them when encountering a juvenile or family struggling with ways to deal with behavior that is not criminal in nature but, that could be down the road if not addressed.”
Hats off to the Virginia Beach Police Department! SFY plans to use this model with the other departments with which it is working.
On the West Coast
 The Zellerbach Family Foundation funded SFY’s development of a California “Think About It First” card for statewide distribution. These cards, given to police, teens and youth-serving community based organizations, teach youth how arrest and court records are distributed and warns youth of their impacts. The Zellerbach Family Foundation also supported development of a website to clarify how people can seal their juvenile records in California. An open record interferes with one’s ability to get a job, loans, and a driver’s license, citizenship and to pursue educational opportunities. SFY had found that differences by county made it impossible to provide all the information needed on the Think About It First! (TAIF!) cards. The TAIF! Cards provide a link to the new site.
The site, Seal It created by the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice in San Francisco, provides information for each of California’s 58 counties on how to go about sealng one’s record, free legal support, and the cost of applying to seal.
At Home
 SFY is pleased to announce the appointment of W. David Walker as Training Director. David has a strong background in law enforcement beginning as a Deputy for the Latah County Sheriff’s Office where he was a member of the Latah County Tactical Emergency Response Team. He transferred to the Moscow Police Department where he was a Patrol Officer and Investigator reaching the rank of Corporal. David helped to create and was the lead investigator for the Latah County Child Abuse Task Force from 1990-1922.
An off-duty injury led David to change careers, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering and spending over 20 years in technical marketing, technical training and communications for a variety of large, multi-national companies.
David is responsible for SFY’s Policing the Teen Brain training programs and recently presented SFY’s training model at the Virginia Strengthening Connections: Fostering a Positive School Climate conference.
