One child enjoying his snack from his Good Food Bag

Your Money At Work

Last June, Impact Circle-1 selected Seattle Tilth's Good Food Bag program as one of four grant recipients. The photo shows one of the children enjoying a snack from his Good Food Bag!

Here are some highlights from their interim report:
  • Served 688 meals and distributed 1,912 Good Food Bags to 1,012 unduplicated participants
  • Six thousand pounds (6,000 lbs.) of produce was sourced from local low-income, immigrant and refugee farmers for these Good Food Bags.
We provided training for seven (7) childcare centers, involving children in the meal preparation and focusing on eating fresh fruits and vegetables. The impact of these trainings was confirmed at the Horn of Africa Services workshop held at the Rainier Vista Neighborhood House. Staff and students sat side by side, students ranging from 8-11 years old and each wiggling with eagerness to help and be involved. One young girl ... responded when I asked what she likes to eat, “I don’t eat anything but Nutella. I ate almost the whole jar today.” ...We broke out into groups to make massaged kale salad to demonstrate how to balance the five flavors: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and pungent. Later, as she was leaving with her Good Food Bag in hand, she said with surprise and affirmation 'I changed my mind, I don’t think that vegetables are ughhh anymore!”

We are pleased to co-sponsor this seminar at Town Hall:

“Diving Into the Mysteries of the Sea”
Speakers: Stephen R. and Anthony R. Palumbi

On a planet filled with mysteries, perhaps we know the least about the deepest sections of the ocean, and the hundreds of thousands of species within. They’ll profile some of their favorites–like the South Pole’s wandering albatross–and give insight into how these creatures thrive, despite living in the darkest, deepest, coldest (or hottest!) conditions on the planet. The Palumbis will also share how humans' increasing effect on the ocean could irreparably change the habitat these creatures call home.
