The Year of the Sheep: gentle, romantic, creative and mild
January 2015 Newsletter

Dear friends and yogis,

At last, the wild, capricious and unpredictable Year of the Horse is ready to reign in and step into the stable. For some, this past horse year was fantastic – fast-paced, full of freedom and charged with adventure. For most, though, the horse year meant lots going on and a rough ride in the saddle (or many falls out of it!). Fortunately, the chaos of the horse year is ending soon. This coming year we can dismount and take a rest with the quieter and more
gentle sheep. Caring, sensitive, romantic and creative, the sheep (also the goat, or ram -- it's the same character in Chinese, yang ç¾Š) brings time to heal through its kind and harmonious nature. Though the official first date of the Chinese New Year isn't until February 19, the year of the sheep starts soon -- February 4 (the sooner the better!).  Though shy and a bit insecure, the sheep is also known for its determination; it only walks straight, and never careens side to side or moves backwards. Its determination, however, can also be a setback: shortsightedness can make a sheep feel discouraged and down. Remember to keep your chin up this year and let any tendencies toward pessimism be softened with good company, an easy breath and an open mind.

As a way to honour the transition to the calm, nurturing sheep year, I'll be teaching a daylong yoga and qigong retreat on Sunday, Feb 1 called Entering Tranquility. It's at triyoga, SOHO.

Other upcoming programs are:

Lastly, my  Yoga, Qigong & Meditation retreat in Normandy, France, with Jodi Smith is fully booked, but Louise Grime and I still have some spaces on our Italian Yoga & Meditation retreat in Umbria.

Wishing you all a very smooth transition off the saddle of the horse year, and sending hopes that you all enjoy a more gentle stroll through the open grazing pastures of the year of the sheep.

With blessings,

Mimi

Class updates:  I have a new qigong class on Tuesdays at 5:00 - 6:00 in triyoga, Camden, as well as meditation + breathing classes on Thursdays at 2:10 -2:50 in Camden, and Saturday mornings at 11:20 - 11:50 in triyoga, Chelsea. This Friday will also be my last class at The Life Centre, Islington. Entering Tranquility: A Yoga and Qigong Daylong Retreat

triyoga, SOHO
Sunday, February 1, 2015
10:00 am - 5:00 pm

“Returning to the source is serenity”
– The Dao de Jing

“Yoga begins with listening”
– Richard Freeman

‘Entering tranquility,’ or rujing (入靜 ) is the Daoist term for meditation.  In this daylong retreat, we will slow down and attune to the various ways that yoga and qigong can help us step back from the clamor and dissonance that can characterize London’s city life, and enter into a more tranquil, calm, meditative awareness.

Yoga, defined and practiced in many ways, begins with the art of listening. Through mindful, gentle vinyasa sequences and a deep restorative session we will foster the capacity for inner listening.  It is by listening that we can awaken the potential for greater insight and meditative awareness that is yoga.  Qigong is a Chinese word meaning the ‘cultivation of life energy’. It stems from Daoist beliefs and traditions that view the universe as implicitly whole, and the human being as a microcosm of a harmonious, balanced macrocosm.  Through techniques that encourage healthy flow of qi (life force), we will explore how qigong exercises can refine and align the energies of the mind, emotions, spirit and body with the innate harmony of the natural world.  The combination of yoga and qigong will be our way of entering tranquility.

While we will do some active movement, the day on a whole will be a deeply restful experience – leaving you feeling replenished and restored. All levels and backgrounds are welcome.

Refining Vinyasa, Deepening Restorative: A Weekend of Workshops with Margi Young and Mimi Kuo-Deemer

Friday - Sunday, March 20 - 22, 2015
triyoga, London, SOHO

This weekend of workshops led by Mimi Kuo-Deemer and Margi Young will take you into a combined journey of refined vinyasa and deep restorative – an amalgam that can generate a blissful state of yogic insight.  The workshop will offer innovative sequences, both in restorative and vinyasa, and take you through methods that are safe, clear and work and move you into the heightened consciousness that is yoga. Margi and Mimi’s joint, signature teaching style is known for exploring yogic philosophy through the asana practice, weaving in the richness of an ancient tradition and understanding the ways it can relate to our contemporary lives.  For those newer to yoga as well as yoga teachers, this weekend will be sure to deepen your understanding of the practice intellectually and physically. Workshops can be taken individually, but we recommend at least one day where you combine both vinyasa and restorative to fully feel the benefits of this approach.

Yoga & Qigong: Seasonal Workshops for Energy, Balance and Wellbeing

The Shala (West Norwood)
Saturday, April 25, 2015
2:00 - 5:00 pm

Spring (Wood): Practices for fostering clear vision, resourcefulness and flexibility

In the words of Leo Tolstoy, “Spring is the time of projects and plans.” In the spring, we climb out of the cold, winter months and often feel ready to take on life with renewed vigor. If, however, we're unprepared for it, the outburst of energy can sometimes knock us off balance and be a shock – like we just want to crawl back under a warm duvet! This workshop will explore ways to align with the energy of spring using qigong practices focusing on the element of wood, associated in Chinese medicine with spring, growth, flexibility and vision.  It will also incorporate fluid yogic practices that focus on the flexibility and health of our joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons.

Locanda della Quercia Calante

Join Louise Grime and Mimi Kuo-Deemer for a weeklong yoga and meditation retreat at La Locanda Quercia Calente, a beautifully renovated farmhouse in the Umbrian hills of Italy. Each day will include two yoga classes, qigong, meditation, three delicious meals, and lots of downtime for lounging, chatting, reading, napping, strolling, swimming, eating gelato, etc.  Mimi and Louise will be co-teaching, blending their love of yoga (hatha, vinyasa, restorative and Iyengar!) into soothing sessions that can take you as deep as you want to go.

There will also be excursions to local attractions, including the historic, walled city of Orvieto,  a soak in the thermal baths at Fonteverde, and a wine tasting from local vineyards. Ayurvedic oil massages, deep tissue massage and other therapies are also available at La Locanda.

Located just 150 km/90 miles north of Rome, La Locanda della Quercia Calante has a spacious and fully equipped yoga studio, outdoor yoga deck, two swimming pools, a whirlpool, elegant rooms, and a restaurant serving local Umbrian cuisine. Vinyasa Flow: An Immersion
triyoga, Camden
July 3-5 & 23 - 25, 2015
6 day immersion course for teachers and teachers in training
33 hours of training, counts toward CPD

This 6-day immersion is aimed at refining and deepening the skills to teach safe and enriching vinyasa flow yoga. The course will explore sequencing templates and ideas for how to structure sound, creative classes, as well as take an in-depth look at adjusting and the energetics of touch. It will also include segments on overall safety; using effective language; working with individual students’ needs while holding collective space and integrating yogic philosophies and themes. Class time will be highly experiential and learning will be based on an interactive and participatory model of inquiry and exploration. Participants will work toward embodying their practice so that their experiences can be articulated and shared with students.

This will be the third year the immersion is running. The course includes an 85-page  manual with sample classes and illustrated opening sequences and subsets, as well as sections on topics such as definitions and considerations of vinyasa, sequencing for efficient movement, and developing themes and narratives.

This immersion is aimed at teachers and teachers in training, or students with at least two years of consistent yoga practice.

“The immersion was more than I could have expected. Mimi's teaching style is like story telling and is so engaging you can’t help but go home with added knowledge.  I’ve been teaching flow yoga for a while, but the course made me feel much more confident within myself and my teaching, and gave me some great ideas to take away." â€“ Lauranza Harvey

“I often expect too much from yoga courses, but for the first time I got more than I hoped to get! Mimi knows so much about vinyasa and is happy to share her knowledge. Her passion is infectious! The course has given me a fresh look at vinyasa, lots of new ideas and ultimately extra confidence in myself, which can only be good for my students.” â€“ Claire Jukes

New classes online at Movement for Modern Life

Two of three Spirit Warmers classes are up -- perfect for generating some inner heat and wellbeing. The classes are short -- about 20-25 minutes each, but definitely get the circulation moving. Combining yoga and some qigong, they are great for kindling the inner fire. Enjoy!
