Welcome to the Everyone's Children Fortnightly Round-Up!

Our first newsletter of 2015 features the latest news, policy updates, funding, events and resources for organisations and staff who support children and families in Glasgow and across Scotland. Please circulate to your colleagues and organisations in your networks.

Special Offer - GCVS Employer’s Advice Service (EAS)

Everyone’s Children is offering a limited number of free or reduced one year subscriptions, or one off human resource consultancies, to smaller organisations working with children, young people and their families who employ their own staff - or are about to do so, in Glasgow. We are targeting this support to organisations which do not already subscribe to this service and would benefit from what it can offer with a view to subscribing in their own right in future years. 
 
Existing users of the service may also be eligible for a one off subsided membership rate if they can demonstrate that they still have a significant need but face particular challenges which make it difficult to remain in membership.  Find out more or sign up....
 

Parents demand inquiry into delivery of free childcare policy

A group of parents from Glasgow, South Lanarkshire and West Lothian have called for an independent inquiry into the delivery of the Scottish Government’s free childcare policy due to difficulties they have experienced in accessing funding for places for their children.

Glasgow Digital makers seek 100 participants aged 14-17

Would any of the young people you work with be interested in taking part in an exciting digital skills project? Funded by Skills Development Scotland, the Glasgow Digital Makers project aims to develop a new generation of young Glaswegians with digital skills by recruiting 100 young people aged 14-17 from across Glasgow who face barriers to getting involved in digital making.  More...

Healthier eating campaign for Scotland’s families

The Scottish Government has launched a new website which aims to inspire and support parents and families to make healthier changes to the way they shop, cook and eat, with the aim of improving their health.  This follows a recent poll of 500 mothers across Scotland which revealed that over 40% believed that it costs too much money to shop for and cook healthier family meals.  Eat Better Feel Better campaign launched to help Scotland’s families make simple changes to the way they shop, cook and eat.  More...

Charity warns parents over child safety on social media

The NSPCC will today launch a new campaign to advise parents on how to address the issue after a panel of more than 500 parents from Mumsnet reviewed 48 social media websites and said all those aimed at adults and teenagers were too easy for children under 13 to sign-up to.  More...

Voluntary Action Fund: Volunteering Support Grant

The Voluntary Action Fund (VAF) is pleased to announce additional funding to help third sector organisations with an annual income of under £250,000 create new or enhanced volunteering projects. The Volunteering Support Grant (VSG), funded by the Scottish Government, will enable organisations to increase the diversity of their volunteer pool while also improving opportunities for skills and personal development through volunteering.  Grants are available of up to £10,000.

Think Big With O2

The "Think Big with O2" youth programme will re-open for applications on the 16th January 2015. The programme supports young people in the UK (aged between 13 and 25) who want to make positive changes to their communities. Initially funding of £300 is available to get projects off the ground. If the project is completed successfully young people may be invited to apply for the second level of the programme -Think Bigger, where O2 provides funding of up to £2500. The programme is open to individuals and groups of young people and the money can be used to cover project related costs such as materials & equipment, cost of renting space, transportation, advertising, etc.  More...
 

Postcode Community Trust: Community Grants Scheme

The Community Grants Programme will be accepting applications for projects that meets one or more of the following funding themes:
  • Advancement of Community Development
  • Advancement of Health
  • Environmental Improvement

Funding For Digital Participation Projects

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations has announced that the second round of its funding for community digital participation projects across Scotland opens on Monday 12th January 2015. A total of £200,000 is available and awards will range from £200 to £10,000, with funding over £10,000 only considered in exceptional circumstances.  The deadline for applications will be Friday 13th February 2015.  More... 

 


Woodward Charitable Trust - Main Grants

The Woodward Charitable Trust, which is one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts has announced that it grant making programme is open for applications. Applications are welcomed from UK registered charities working addressing a wide range of social issues. This includes children and young people who are isolated, at risk of exclusion or involved in anti-social behaviour.
The closing date for applications is the 15th May 2015. 
Woodward Trust Summer Playscheme Grants Programme. This is open to charities with an income not exceeding £100,000 a year.  The next deadline for receipt of applications for the Children's Summer Playschemes Grants for 2015 is the 17th April 2015 but applications should not be submitted prior to the 2nd February 2015.  More...

Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland  - Funding Surgeries

37 grant awards were made through the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland Henry Duncan Awards programme in 2014, totalling £163,160.  Over two-thirds were in the £5,000 and under category, with over 40% of the awards being repeat funding providing vital continuation support for grassroots charities in these difficult financial times. Glasgow based projects benefitted to the tune of £61,040. 

2015 surgeries for local registered charities.  The surgery is an opportunity for you to have a one-to-one session with one of the Foundation’s Assessors, and to discuss how to go about putting an application to the Foundation.   If you wish to attend one of the surgeries, please call 0131 444 4020 to arrange an appointment.

Everyone's Children Project Training

Glasgow Council for the Voluntary Sector
 

The Everyone’s Children Training programme is offered to third sector organisations operating in Glasgow.   These sessions  provide a policy and practice context for key third sector roles  in implementing the Getting It Right For Every Child programme which promotes the wellbeing of children, young people and families in their families and communities. It will also encourage the sharing of views and experiences with colleagues and support the developing of useful networks around the work as the GIRFEC approach becomes more prominent in the delivery of services in Glasgow.

One Parent Families Scotland - Universal Credit Training

Updated for 2015, this course is aimed at professionals working with single parent families who want to understand how universal credit will affect their clients. Work and Pensions Secretary, Iain Duncan Smith announced that there will be an accelerated rollout of universal credit to all Jobcentres and local authorities across the country from early 2015. Introduction to Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome

Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability

The Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability invites you to book a place on this new one-day course, which will provide you with an introduction to Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome

National Third Sector GIRFEC Project Learning Event

Friday 6th February 2015 from 9:15am - 4.00pm  
Edinburgh 

The National Third Sector GIRFEC Project is holding a one day National Learning Event to explore the theme of partnership, share the learning from their work to date in the demonstration sites and explore the implications of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 on how we plan and deliver services across Scotland in future. The event will include:  
 
  • High-profile speakers from a range of organisations involved in the planning and delivery of Children’s Services;
  • An opportunity to learn more about the work of the National Third Sector GIRFEC Project;
  • A chance to network and share with colleagues from across Scotland. 
    This event will be of interest to those who plan, develop and support the delivery of Children’s Services, including Chief Executives and senior management within the third sector, local authorities, health, government directorates and regulatory bodies, professional associations, representative bodies and umbrella groups.  Book your place...

Children’s Right to Play facilitator training – free

Wednesday 18th February 2015  09.45 - 14.30 
Mitchell Library, Stirling Room, North Street, Glasgow  G3 7DN 
 
  • To take part, you should be someone who already has play qualifications or who can demonstrate experience in play, ideally in conjunction with some experience in the delivery of training.
  • You will be expected to deliver the Children’s Right to Play Session on two occasions to colleagues or other interested professionals and individuals within 3 months of taking part in the training.

Consultation Events - Children and young People Scotland Act

To support the  Consultation on Draft Secondary Legislation for Parts 9, 10 and 11 of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014, to be published in February 2015,  the Scottish Government is holding 3 Regional Events in Glasgow (24 Feb), Perth (16 Mar) and Edinburgh (30 Mar).  The events will include: 
 
  • An opportunity to learn more about Named Person, Child’s Plan and Wellbeing;
  • An opportunity to provide feedback on the draft statutory guidance;
  • Share learning and explore the implications of implementing Named Person, Child’s Plan and Wellbeing;
  • A chance to network and share with colleagues from across Scotland.
