2015
We're ready for the new year!
We ended 2014 in celebration of our families and our faith. We strengthened relationships with 20+ organizations throughout the city. We met with a countless number of organizations and individuals who are interested in partnering with us. We opened our doors to 246 employment opportunities. Thanks to the hardworking men and women of CleanTurn, our deeply valued partners and a strategic Program Related Investment from the Columbus Foundation we were able to double our growth in 2014. We have much to be grateful for, and much to look forward to. In the coming year, we hope to build on these successes and learn from our failures to further the mission of CleanTurn and deepen the impact of employment with our current employees. One way that we hope to do this is through a job readiness "boot camp". The CleanTurn staff is working hard to put together a strong program to add value to workforce development in Columbus!

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT!
EMBARK/Kindway is an innovative offender reentry program that works with men and women returning to Central Ohio. Participants receive guidance and support as they navigate their journey from incarceration to independence. We have really enjoyed getting to know the leaders at Kindway! We are motivated by the way they express true belief in their members which is seen in their commitment to seeing lives turned around.

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO
In the State of Ohio we see nearly 50,000 individuals incarcerated each year at an average cost of about $25,000 for each individual. The total direct cost is over $1.2 billion each year we spend on doing, in part, what we believe is best to keep our communities safe and vibrant. The work of our elected officials and public servants is greatly appreciated and one that is extremely complex. However, it is no more complex than the role that each of us play in making our communities places where girls and boys receive a quality education rooted in the humanities - even as it equips them with tools they need to meet market demands in the current and future economy. It is no more complex than our role as fathers, mothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers responsible for nurturing the next generation. It is no more complex than embracing the challenges that extend beyond our normal zones of personal comfort to learn from someone we perceive to be different than us so that we might in fact realize our perceptions have needed a greater dose of reality all along. It is no more complex than the focused attention each of us need in our effort to live a life confident in the possibility of good!
In 2012, a small group of individuals decided to invest personal resources in the launch of CleanTurn. Eight of us pulled together $300,000 to launch a social enterprise believing in the possibility of good. Since inception, we have provided 246 opportunities to individuals who have had significant challenges in their past. Over 30% of these individuals have either transitioned on to new opportunities (many in the trades) or are still with us. When we factor in the cost of incarceration, the tax contributions resulting from employment- including sales taxes paid, child support, etc. we have estimated the social return on investment to be nearly $4.5m -- that is more than a 1500% return on the initial investment made in 2012!
We have a lot of work to do in figuring out the details on how to measure social impact and social return. We have a lot to learn in general! We have a lot to improve! We have a lot we want to do that we are not doing! We long to see a higher percentage of individuals move on to other opportunities or remain with us as we grow. We are also grateful for the network of relationships that have made these three years a strong start. We are grateful for the small impact we have been able to have. In 2015 our goal is to see our impact deepen as it broadens. Further, we plan on moving forward with space that can accommodate our vision of creating a CleanTurn Center for Social Enterprise that can serve as a catalyst for social impact throughout Columbus and Central Ohio!
Thank you for your continued partnership in believing in the possibility of good!
- John Rush
