"Making a Living
  as a Portrait Artist"

Bob Hicks contributor to this US Magazine writes about three artists who paint portraits for a living.
"Portraiture is a two-way street: artist and subject need to reach an understanding. For Budreau, that usually results in a relaxed, warm painting, sometimes surprising layers and deliberate inventions :
'I always look for narrative, metaphors, double entendres.'

What Eye Think
Being Blind
• Robert Bateman was in Kamloops in November 2014 and presented to me views on Modern Art vs Realism, and he spoke of Modern Art as being finished in the late 1960's and no longer has any direction. Realism was and always will be real art.

I agree. I say a composition depicting something recognizable that uplifts and inspires thought above and beyond the mundane, or better still when it triggers positive feelings or relating to another human, has more benefit for the deepening isolation and depression of the texting society in which many live.

Bateman spoke of his last visit to the Museum of Modern Art where a recent purchase was a broken window blind crumpled in a heap on the floor.

My reaction to this is: What 'great meaning' it must have? Does it say something about the passing of the industrial age or changing trends in window dressings that hide us from the outside world or does to speak to the future of mankind or is it about the 'artist' who's life is in disarray?

Anyone can take an existing object and use it as a metaphor, but calling it art is absolutely ridiculous.
What a cop out on drawing and seeing. What a cop out on motor skills, what a cop out on contemplation, what a cop out on vision, ideas, and patience, trial and error.
By all means get to the quick result because there is no value in the process of creating.
What a misnomer to call it an "art" purchase. It's not an insult to real artists or real art because there's no comparing junk to art.

The strongest metaphor it can be is being blind about real art.

Releasing a commission to it's owner is a unique moment.
Cathy Ferguson grew a bit emotional when she picked
up the portrait of herself (see below) and husband Ken. She commissioned it to celebrate their 31 years
of marriage.

Rodin Museum in Philadelphia
Saturday, February 7, 2015, The Rodin Museum, which holds one of the largest collections of works by French sculptor Auguste Rodin in the US, will undergo a full-scale reinstallation focusing on the sculptor’s remarkable achievements as a portraitist. The new presentation will showcase the sculptor’s most iconic portraits as well as exceptional works that have not been on view for several years. It will bring together a group of works that embody the artist’s realist spirit, offering a broader understanding
of his contribution to the formation of modern art.

Curly Girly
Curly Girly is the first experiment using the painting methods of the Master Artists of the 1600's.
Its magical watching it unfold from my very hand, although time consumingFive more paintings
followed this one and I can see this technique is
one for future exploration.
