CURA Travel Grants Available

CURA provides conference travel funding to graduate students from any department who are travelling to major specialized conferences related to urban and regional issues. We offer a number of awards per calendar year, and each award is capped at $500 per student. We try to limit our awards to one or two students per individual conference in order to maximize exposure.

In the past, we have funded students from the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics, the Department of Geography, and more. Students must include a title and abstract of the paper to be presented. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis .

Please contact Matthew Adair with any questions about the process at adair.64@osu.edu

CURA Collaborative Project

Are you a self-motivated researcher with the technical chops to back up your enthusiasm? The Center for Urban & Regional Analysis works in a small-team environment to produce quality research outcomes for a variety of clients. This opening is on a collaborative NSF funded project.

Qualified candidates will have the capability to match large data sets within an established IRB protocol and will consistently produce interim and final project deliverables. Specifically, data derived from places of employment and individual estimated residential locations will be matched and coded in Python or other suitable programming language. Small area maps from the State of Ohio are project deliverables. This position is a summer research appointment for approximately 200 hours of work and would be ideal for a graduate student who has another assignment beginning in autumn semester.

Please send resumes and inquiries to okelly.1@osu.edu for consideration.

Graduate Specialization in Demography Approved

Ohio State University Graduate Students now have one more specialization to consider during their studies. The Council on Academic Affairs recently approved the creation of a Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Demography (GISD), a move supported by the Department of Sociology and the Institute for Population Research.

The specialization will be ready for student enrollment beginning in Fall 2015. There will be informational meetings in early Spring that will provide more details, answer student questions, and establish the procedures for enrollment. Housing Dialogue Group to Meet Feb. 27 at MORPC

Discussion about affordable housing to continue

At the first housing dialogue meeting of 2015, the group began with a presentation on housing data in Columbus and the metropolitan area from Aaron Schill and Zach Crafton of Community Research Partners (CRP) and Matt Martin of the Kirwan Institute.

Using the Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy assessment results from HUD, the researchers highlighted the statistical housing affordability gap in the City of Columbus. For rental households making under 30% of Area Median Income (AMI), data show a gap of 31,985 units between the supply and demand of affordable rental units.
