12 TIPS FOR A HEALTHY HEART

It's never too late to make changes to look after your heart, improve your health, and get the most out of life. The most common risks for heart disease include:
  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol (poor diet)
  • Sedentary lifestyle (lack of exercise)
Reducing such risk factors can also reduce your risk for heart disease. Over 80% of women have one or more heart disease risk factors (and almost half have three or more) yet most are unaware they are even at risk.

Did you know that 80% of heart disease is preventable? Here are 12 ways you can improve your heart (and overall) health, even changing just one of these aspects of your lifestyle could have a HUGE impact on your health:

1. Stop smoking (Editor's note: try Alan Carr's EasyWay to Stop Smoking, reading this book helped me quit smoking over four years ago)

2. Eat a high-fibre heart-healthy diet (like the Mayo Clinic-recommended Mediterranean diet) and seek out heart-smart recipes to reduce sodium, sugar and saturated fat in your cooking

3. Take essential supplements such as Omega-3 and a good Multivitamin, then look to add additional supplements based on your individual needs. These may include: Alpha Lipoic Acid, Calcium, Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, Vitamin K2 and Magnesium

4. Maintain a healthy weight

5. Keep blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol under control

6. Exercise at least 30 minutes every day - or when you can, 1-2 days a week is better than 0

7. Get a good night’s sleep - sleep problems have been linked to increased cardiovascular risk

8. Talk to your doctor about screening tests for heart disease if you have a family history (Mum or sister < age 65, Dad or brother < age 55 when they had a cardiac event of some kind) or if you’ve ever had pregnancy complications like pre-eclampsia, or if you have ever been told you are pre-diabetic or diabetic

9. Learn how to reduce and manage stress (and don’t forget to b-r-e-a-t-h-e…)

10. Educate yourself about your own heart health

11. Do activities that can improve heart health throughout your day: gardening, walking, stair climbing – even doing housework

12. Anyone with concerns about heart health can learn about the “Awesome Foursome”  by following this link, emailing info@pharmaceutical.co.nz or calling 0800 HORMONE to ask one of our pharmacists for more information. This combination of nutritional supplements has been shown to have a favorable impact on cardiovascular health, including cholesterol and blood pressure. The "Awesome Foursome" includes:

SEVEN ESSENTIAL SUPPLEMENTS FROM
DR BERNARD WILLIS

Each month we'll be publishing an excerpt from Dr Bernard Willis' article on the seven supplements that cover all the basics regardless of your gender, age or current health status. Taking them can be the first step in your journey toward optimal health, this month's supplement is:

5. CURCUMIN
This compound found in the curry spice turmeric is best known for its anti-inflammatory properties but that is just the start of its healing qualities. Curcumin may also have:
  • Anti-cancer
  • Anti-arthritic
  • Antiviral
  • Antifungal and
  • Immune-boosting effects.
ScienceWatch recently highlighted 19 papers on the health benefits of curcumin — many of them focusing on its anticancer activity.

I now consider it one of the most important supplements to take on a daily basis. The recommended daily dose is 1,000 mg.

RAW BROWNIES

The perfect romantic dessert for two! Enjoy these simple and delicious sugar, dairy and gluten free brownies!!
  • 2 cups of medjool dates (they're the squishier, stickier, tastier kind of dates)
  • 1 cup of peacans
  • 2-3 tablespoons of raw cacao powder
  • 2 tablespoons of maple syrup (optional, can be replaced with any other liquid sweetener)
Makes 10 brownies

Blend the peacans in a food processor until they form a crumbly mixture, then add the dates and blend again before adding the cacao and maple syrup.

Place the mixture in a baking tray and either refrigerate for 3-4 hours or freeze for one to allow them to set. Then keep them in the fridge for freshness.
