News-Press office vandalized
Effort to stifle speech has open-borders overtone

According to the Santa Barbara News-Press:

As the French took Thursday to mourn the slaughter of a dozen people in retaliation for cartoons published in Paris-based Charlie Hebdo magazine poking fun at the Prophet Muhammad, someone with apparent open-border sentiments lobbed paint bombs and sprayed graffiti at the headquarters of the Santa Barbara News-Press over the paper using the word "illegals" to describe people in this country illegally.

At issue is the word "illegals" in a Jan. 3 headline accompanying a story about the state of California granting driving privileges to people who entered the U.S. illegally.

The incident happened in the run-up to a Thursday night protest over the headline in De la Guerra Plaza. About 100 people turned out, including members of the group People Organizing for the Defense and Equal Rights of Santa Barbara Youth. They seek to assert editorial control by demanding the paper "retract" the headline, apologize and adopt Associated Press style, which, since 2013, has sanctioned variations on the word illegal, including "living in or entering a country illegally or without legal permission."

At one point, they marched on State Street, and then held a sit-in, stopping traffic.

News-Press editorial columnist Andy Caldwell wrote Thursday that there's more to the protest than a word some might find offensive.

"Understand that the ultimate goal of the activists involved is to do away with the concept of immigration law altogether in favor of open borders and universal citizenry. They are attacking the use of the term illegal, not because they are offended, but because they seek to affect the outcome of a national debate by controlling language in order to stifle dissent."
