Our member, Sherry Richardson, is in need of a ride to church on Sunday mornings.  If you live near the Cherry Hill area (zipcode 21225) and are able to provide transportation, please contact Nancy Benjamin at nancyb235@comcast.net.
Bicentennial Brainstorm

Did you know that in just two years First Unitarian will begin a series of major bicentennial celebrations? Our church was founded in 1817, built in 1818, and in 1819 hosted the "Baltimore Sermon" that became Unitarianism's foundational document. We plan to mark those occasions in style, but we need your help! The Board of Trustees has scheduled a "listening session" after services on Feb. 8 to give the whole congregation a chance to offer input on our bicentennial planning. We hope you will join us on Feb. 8, our church's Founders Day, to help launch us toward a series of successful celebrations of our church's proud history and lasting legacy.
Knit Your Bit

All are invited to the church’s next Bookstore Cafe on Friday, February 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. This week’s theme is Knit Your Bit. Experienced church knitters and crocheters will be on hand to help people who want to learn during a cozy evening of good books, hot drinks, treats and warm fellowship. See Jennie Milstein or Nancy West for more information.
We are still collecting warm winter clothing for Our Homeless Neighbors. When we last made a delivery, we asked several people what was most needed by them. The answer was (in addition to the clothing): blankets or sleeping bags, socks, ChapStick and small packets of Kleenex.

We will be sorting the clothing on Monday, February 16 at 6:15, and making a delivery on Monday, February 23 at 6:15.
Youth Group Gathering Rescheduled!

The Youth Group Gathering originally scheduled for Sunday, February 1 has been rescheduled to Sunday, February 8 at 5pm at the church.  We will be continuing our "Popcorn Theology" discussion series, with the episode "Darmok" from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as the frame of discussion.  If you have any questions, please contact Michael Brown at remembermichaelbrown@gmail.com.
Restoring the Universalist Lectern

Valeri Mc Neal was stripping and restoring the 1932 Universalist Lectern that usually resides on the chancel.  She had almost finished stripping the lectern when she passed away.  It would be lovely if someone would volunteer to finish her work.   All these years, we thought the lectern was oak under the paint--but it is mahogany—a nice match for the Channing pulpit. You will have assistance from our restoration expert, Mark West.  If you are interested, contact me at jamayer@verizon.net , or, see me at coffee hour on Sunday after church.

Survey of Interest: First Unitarian Coffee House

In the past few months First Unitarian Church has opened its doors for a series of evening events to encourage community building and fellowship.  The Ad-Hoc Coffee House Committee has been working feverishly to make these events a more permanent and regular part of our church’s life.

In order to make this vision a reality, we need you.  What types of events would entice you to enter our Parish Hall?  Would you like to volunteer to help us with our efforts?  Please take a moment to fill out our survey here.

Thank you!
Healthy Congregations is Coming!

First U is facing rapid change and big challenges. (All churches do!) Building Healthy Congregations is a program designed to help us manage these transformations -- in healthy ways, of course. Interested in learning more about this series of four workshops? Visit the Joseph Priestly District website and the UUA site for details or contact Laura Laing (llaing@comcast.net) or Molly Ruhlman (molly.ruhlman@gmail.com). We're hoping that up to 20 First U members will attend these workshops (March 14, March 28, April 18 and May 16). Please consider donating to the Healthy Congregations scholarship fund (to help defray the costs for those who can't afford to attend). Contact Laura or Molly for those details.
Ministerial Evaluation: An update from the Board and Committee on Ministry

Every three years, our church's Committee on Ministry (COM), which oversees all aspects of ministry in our congregation, conducts a formal evaluation of the work of our minister. Last spring the COM interviewed nearly 50 congregants, and its report was presented to the Board in July. It is important that we share with you the process that is now under way for the follow-up to that report.

The ministerial evaluation provides Rev. David Carl Olson with a framework for establishing his goals for the coming years. The achievement of those goals will then be evaluated by the COM in its regular ongoing work with Rev. Olson, and in the next formal evaluative process. The Board recently met in a workshop session to discuss the COM report, and to determine the kind of guidance the Board will give to Rev. Olson for the creation of his new goals.

This meeting was facilitated by Rev. David Pyle, District Executive of the Joseph Priestley District of the UUA. The meeting resulted in the initiation of two processes that we want to share with you. The first was anticipated: The Board is creating guidelines for Rev. Olson to advise the writing of performance and ministry goals that facilitate accountability and measurable progress. Once that has been done, the COM will meet with Rev. Olson to discuss these goals before they are sent to the Board for approval.

With the encouragement of Rev. Pyle, a second process has also begun. The Board has decided to work with Rev. Olson, Rev. Pyle, and the COM to draft a covenant document between Rev. Olson and the Board (and possibly other congregational leaders). According to our church bylaws, one of the COM's functions is to play a mediating role between the minister and the Board. A formal covenant can help improve many relationships by providing clarity about roles and expectations.

We will continue to keep you informed as the steps toward creating the goals and the covenant are established.

We welcome your questions about these processes. You may contact COM Chair Molly Ruhlman (COM@firstunitarian.net) or the Board of Trustees (boardpres@firstunitarian.net) for more information.
