Florida - "Land of 1,000 Springs"  by Robert L. Knight, PhD

Florida has the greatest assemblage of artesian springs in the world, with over 1,000 springs documented to-date. Florida also has the largest number of first-magnitude springs (33 counting river rises) with historic average flows exceeding about 65 million gallons per day, and the largest individual spring groups with flows over 500 million gallons of groundwater per day (Figure 1).  The largest of these springs and spring groups are well known - Silver, Wakulla, Ichetucknee, Weeki Wachee, Homosassa, Rainbow, Crystal, Manatee, Blue, Wekiwa, etc. - and almost every Floridian remembers the first spring they visited and when that visit occurred. Third Springs Roundtable Highlights Florida Springs Council

On Tuesday, January 27th, representatives from 24 organizations with a connection to springs met in Gainesville to discuss the newly-formed Florida Springs Council (FSC). An introduction to the Council was presented by Executive Committee member, Dr. Robert Knight, with follow-up presentations by Committee Chairs Dr. Robert Palmer (Legislative), Rob Williams, Esq. (Action), Dr. Katie Tripp (Education), and Heather Culp, Esq. (Fundraising).

During the afternoon session, Roundtable participants engaged in group discussion on ways to promote the mission and goals of the Florida Springs Council. In the coming weeks, all participating organizations will receive a sign-on letter to join in supporting the endeavors of the Council on behalf of Florida's springs.

FSI Will Host Annual Give Springs A Break from April 10-12

Mark your calendars college students! In April, the Florida Springs Institute plans to partner with the UF chapter of the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) to host a weekend immersion experience at Ginnie Springs. Students from all colleges and universities are invited to dive into Florida's springs during a two-day event that includes overnight camping, swimming, tubing, nightly bonfires, and environmental presentations.

Last year, over 50 students attended FSI's first Give Springs A Break weekend, where they met other individuals who appreciate the beauty and wonder of natural springs and envision a brighter future for Florida's environment. The weekend was full of fun and adventure as students learned about springs ecology, cave diving, and environmental advocacy. There was also plenty of time to explore both Ginnie Springs and the nearby Santa Fe River with snorkels, kayaks, and inner tubes!

Planning for the 2015 event is now underway. Keep an eye on the FSI website in February and March for additional info.
