6:00 p.m. - Spring Gala "Masquerade Carnivale"

The Spring Gala Chair and Gala Committee Members would like to introduce to you this year's exciting event: Masquerade Carnivale!

The Masquerade Carnivale gets its origins from Mardi Gras as it was celebrated in the 1700s, both in Europe and in New Orleans. This was long ago, before the parades and debauchery! It was instead celebrated with elegant society balls and extravagant carnivals. People dressed in their best outfits or even costumes and constructed masks out of whatever items they had on hand. The masks could be lavishly decorated or simply made. There was always an exciting air of romance and festivity! The traditional colors of Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold, each having its own significance: Purple stands for Justice, Green for Faith, and Gold for Power. This year's elegant event again takes place at the historic Phoenix event center.

We encourage you to have fun with your attire, but it is by no means a requirement. Come as lavishly or as simply as you like. It is sure to be a night of fun and festivity!

Come one, come all and enjoy the Silent and Live Auctions, sample the amazing bourbons at our “Bourbon Street Bourbon Party” right there at the event! Sign-up for one of our amazing, Limited Edition Sign-Up Parties and dance the night away with Live Karaoke from the SexyTime Karaoke Band!

Don’t forget to participate in the Masquerade Carnivale Raffle! You or someone you know could win $5,000! All additional money raised goes to the Cincinnati Waldorf School!! This is a fun opportunity to raise money and have a great time. Someone is going to win! Shouldn’t it be you?? The winner will be announced that night at the event.

What would a party be without the food? Executive Chef Jeremy Luers has been tasked with creative, New Orleans-inspired hors d'oeuvres with vegetarian and gluten-free options. Come and enjoy original dishes, prepared with a New Orleans flare. Try one of the delicious, original, themed and handcrafted cocktails courtesy of Molly Wellman, Cincinnati’s premier mixologist.

Get your tickets now at our Masquerade Carnivale auction site. Support the Spring Gala and the Cincinnati Waldorf School. See you there!

Questions? Want to know how you can help? Have items to donate? Considering sponsoring the event? Please contact Roger Rose at cwsgalachair@cinciwaldorf.org.
Things to Know and Do at CWS

Car Line Reminders

Make your fellow Chestnut Street travelers happy (both parents and neighbors) and please do not turn left into the CWS parking lot when traveling west on Chestnut. Instead pull up to Oak Street and circle around the island in the median; then turn right into the parking lot.

Also please remember our No Idling Policy. Young lungs are at work here! We ask that you turn off your car when you are not actively moving through the car line. We know it's cold, so maybe bring along a blanket if you plan to be sitting in the parking lot for any length of time.

If you are a family that has a sitter or relative picking up your child from school, kindly share these reminders with them. They are important. Thank you for your consideration!

CWS to Host Regional Waldorf Conference in March

Our Cincinnati Waldorf School is the proud host site for the 2015 Regional AWSNA Conference held March 26-28. This is the first time our school has hosted such a prestigious conference and our entire community should beam with pride for this opportunity!

AWSNA stands for the "Association of Waldorf Schools in North America" and it is the accrediting body for all Waldorf schools in North America. North America is broken into regions and Waldorf representatives from each region gather a few times a year to strengthen their working relationships and collaborative support between schools. Yearly all staff and community members from each region are invited to a conference hosted by one Waldorf school within that region and, in the summer, all regions gather for the larger annual conference where everyone can share what is happening in each region. It is an honor for our school to be the chosen site for our region's annual conference!

We welcome all of our CWS families to participate in this conference. Full details about the conference and online registration is located at our website HERE.

Not able to attend the conference but would like to help?
Hosting this conference will require a full CWS community effort to come together to prepare our campus for our guests and to host our guests when they arrive. We would love your support in these preparations and hospitality opportunities:

March 21-CWS Community Work Day-come to main campus and help us with chores inside and outside to spruce up campus!
March 23-26-Stop by the main office and choose a chore. We will have an on-going list of ways for you to help around campus.
March 26-Hospitality hosts needed for morning preparations, lunch service and dinner service-meals are catered & we need volunteers to serve and clean up.
March 27-Hospitality hosts needed all day with meal service & clean up.
March 28-Hospitality hosts needed for morning and afternoon meal service & clean up.

We are also seeking families who may have extra room in their home to host a visiting conference attendee from another Waldorf School. Sometimes our guests would prefer to stay with a family rather than in a hotel. Please let us know if you could open up your home to one of our guests.

Contact Christine Masur if you can volunteer to help and she can give you more specific details: cmasur@cinciwaldorf.org or 513-541-0220 extension 203.

Alumni Updates

Zachary Herbert '14 is a freshman at Wyoming High School where he maintains a GPA above 3.7. He is also on the varsity soccer team. His parents feel that his transition to high school went very smoothly and describe him as a creative and critical thinker, who "wants to know the why and how, not just the what. He is confident and uses his art skills in his regular classes."

Anna Kaiser '09 is a freshman at University of Cincinnati, majoring in Biochemical Engineering.
She graduated last spring from Walnut Hills High School and was honored with both an Alumni Scholarship and Cincinnatus Scholarship. Anna's parents believe that her Waldorf education is reflected in her care for the environment, wide cultural knowledge and strong ability to work collaboratively on team projects.

Why Waldorf?

This is an enormous transition year for our family. As our 8th grader is at this moment expanding his worldview rafting, hiking, and serving a Navajo family during his eighth grade trip, my 1st year preschooler is freely discovering the wonder and magic of toads, songs, sand, and new friends. My 6th grader is eagerly offering to help me to inscribe a pentagon within a circle, a recent exercise in her class. My second grader is joyfully entering the world of literacy, at her own pace.

I love all stages of the Waldorf experience for my children. I clearly remember both mine and my husband’s jaws dropping the first time we saw main lesson books at our first Open House. On that day, I conversed with a 6th grader who not only looked me directly in the eye when speaking to me, but also spoke movingly about the literature he was reading that year. When I walked into the nursery class for the first time, I immediately wished that I could have had that kind of classroom growing up.

Why Waldorf?
Because when I asked a teacher how would she respond to an area of giftedness in my eldest, she answered that she would work on the areas in which he was weak, in order to ensure he was well rounded.
Because the low tech upbringing that Waldorf encourages helps develop healthy kids.
Because my children are not taught how to successfully complete standardized tests, but instead are led to a place where they can encounter the joy of learning.
Because community, beauty, and interdependence are encouraged instead of independence, competition, and expedience.
Because recess and daily time outside are priorities!
Because Waldorf teaches to different learning styles.
Because the eighth grade year is not just preparation for high school, but also serves as a rite of passage for the Waldorf student with the eighth grade project and trip.

Peace

~Racquel Dugat, CWS parent

Mail to look forward to?!

In addition to being a parent of a Waldorf preschooler, Jennifer Lanski is also an artist. (Perhaps you know her family from seeing them bike to school in nearly all weather conditions, or maybe you've seen her drawing on location in Mariemont or Fairfax.)
Jennifer has an ongoing project that you may be interested in, called subscriptionART. Twice a month subscribers receive postcard-sized prints created from original drawings, delivered through the mail. (CWS was even featured in one!) If you subscribe, the subscriptionART project can bring joy and anticipation to your mailbox too. Subscriptions start at just $20 for 4 months.
