The post positions have been drawn and the $20,000 2015 bestbet Derby will be upon us on Saturday evening in the 11th race at bestbet Orange Park. What a great field of greyhounds we have heading into this race. Five of the eight contenders won at least 2 rounds, and 7 of the 8 posted up a win in qualifying. There is a good mix of greyhounds in this field with a lot of breaks, some stalkers, and some greyhounds with great closing speed. Loads of stakes experience here too. We have stakes winners, Chasmo’s Octane and Ww’s Sweetie, and several stakes finalist and competitors. There might not be a true favorite here, as this race is chalk full of greyhounds that have a chance to win it all if everything goes their way. Some greyhounds drew well in the finals, and others will have to play the hand that has been dealt to them, so let’s take a closer look at the finalist and how this race might play out.

Gulf Greyhound King & Queen

The qualifying round of the $4,000 King & Queen Stakes will start up tonight at Gulf Greyhound Park with one race of kings and one race of queens. Seldom Told, who currently rules the local oval every time he steps on the track, will be competing for the crown in race 10. Springwater Izzy, previously featured in the Inside Lure, will try to show her rank amongst the queens in race 12.

The top four finishers in each race will advance to the championship final on Saturday night, February 14th.

Magic Overtakes The Storm!

When the box opened it was the Palm Beach entry Storm Control that rocketed to the lead with Husker Magic close behind. Trouble in the first turn allowed the two front runners to continue their pace around the oval. Lee Opera was knocked wide but JS Speedypebbles and Mac's Bonita tumbled. It was a two-dog race down the backstretch but Storm Control could not hold off the charging Husker Magic that passed him for the win mid-stretch and won by two lengths.

Flawless Victory at the Sprint Championship

B's Headliner found herself on the front page of the greyhound racing world by winning the $30,000 Naples-Fort Myers Sprint Championship on Saturday, Jan 31st. Her winning performance was flawless. Coming out of the escape turn laying 4th, she put herself in cruise mode and breezed on by her competitors in the backstretch to seal the deal with a 4-length victory.

James W. Paul Derby Preview

No first-round winners in Race 6, however, two entries to keep an eye on that are in favorable post positions, #1 Fire Down Below and #8 Omega Point.

In Race 8, first-round victor #8 Nothin Fornothin looks to be in a good spot to repeat. Also positioned nicely is #3 Pat C Hooraw.

Race 10 highlights first-round winner #2 Paid Vacation. This 24-month old youngster has really taken to the middle distance and in this qualifier, will most likely be coming from off the pace.

Flying Riot wins the 2015 Super Hound Challenge Championship!

He began his drive to be the best by winning his divisional round match race over CBJ Old Glory by 4 1/2 lengths. In the conference round he was up against another speedball in Flyin Supergiant.  He defeated that fold by 2 1/2 lengths in a speedy time of 31.91. In the final, Flying Riot faced a strong opponent in Kiowa Jared. Kiowa Jared is a strong versatile runner that can go to the front or close ground late. Once again Flying Riot proved his speed was too much as he cruised to a 3 length victory and was crowned the Challenge Champion.

2014 All-American Team

Joey Ice, multiple stakes winner and track champion at Derby Lane last year, has been named captain of the 2014 All-America team.

The 2014 eight-member squad—which is the 52nd All-America team in history (dating back to 1963)—is sponsored by the American Greyhound Track Operators Association (AGTOA).

Others named to the 2014 team are Flying Titanium (Southland), Lee Opera (Orange Park), Husker Magic (Derby Lane), Rob Gronkowski (Palm Beach), U Too Pure Silk (Southland), Boc’s John Luke (Bluffs Run) and Kiowa Leer Loyd (Wheeling).

The only females on the team are Lee Opera and Husker Magic. All eight team members this time around happen to be sprinters, and two team members are repeaters from the 2013 squad.

These eight stars will be honored with All-America plaques at the Greyhound Hall Of Fame awards ceremony on Thursday night, Apr. 23, during the NGA Spring Meet in Abilene, KS.
