LGBT HIP News


LGBT Identities and Learning Disabilities Round Table report

 
LGBT HIP recently held a round-table discussion looking into LGBT identities and Learning Disabilities, inviting LGBT people with learning disabilities and workers from the LGBT sector and Learning Disabilities sector to explore challenges faced by LGBT people with LD and for workers supporting them.

LBQ Womens Health Survey Report

LGBT HIP has now concluded its survey looking into Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer women's health. A big thank you to all of you who took part. The results and analysis of the survey will be available on the Switchboard website shortly.

LGBT Substance Misuse Focus Group

Pavilions will be taking over the contract to deliver drug and alcohol, treatment and recovery services in Brighton and Hove from April 2015. 

On the 6th February from 2-4 pm LGBT HIP & Pavillions will be hosting a Focus Group for people from LGBT communities to share their views and inform how the new Pavilions Recovery Service can meet the needs of the LGBT population in Brighton and Hove.

We want to hear from:

  • People who are current service users of the drug and alcohol treatment services
  • Potential service users 
  • Ex-service users
  • People working in services

LGBT Personal Health Budgets Focus Group

Personal Health Budgets (PHBs) are a sum of money allocated to support individuals’ specialist health and wellbeing needs, which are currently only available to those with severe health conditions. Over the next few years PHBs are going to be extended to include a wider range of people particularly those with a range of long-term health conditions. The Federation for Disabled People, in partnership with LGBT HIP are holding a discussion and focus group on the 27th February for LGBT people to find out more about PHBs and discuss the changes taking place. Brighton & Hove
LGBT Switchboard is 40!


 
 
2015 is Switchboard's 40th Anniversary year (the telephone helpline started in 1975). We are planning events throughout the year to celebrate and to raise much-needed funds to sustain our services for the future.
Our first event will be a Firewalk on 1st May where you can learn the secret of walking on hot coals to raise money for Switchboard (registration info coming soon)
To mark this anniversary, w
e are also compiling stories about the ways Switchboard has served the LGBT community over the last 40 years. If you've been involved with Switchboard over those past forty years then please send us your stories: have you volunteered for Switchboard, used our services or worked here? Send your story to Maria here.

Older LGBT Project  


In 2015, the Older LGBT Project will be focusing on housing & social care and reaching more vulnerable and isolated older LGBT people in our communities. We are also exploring the need for an older LGBT befriending project and LGBT bereavement support group.

The Older LGBT Project hosts two regular drop-ins, in association with local community projects:
Meet Me at St John's
10:30am-12:00pm at St John's Day Centre on the first Wednesday of every month.
Meet me at St Richards
10:30am-12pm at the Hangleton & Knoll Project. The next date is the 25th of Feb.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week 23/02 - 01/03


As part of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, on the 21st of February at 2.30pm Brighton and Hove Eating Disorders Service (known as BHEDs Peer 2 Peer), in partnership with MindOUT and Brighton and Hove LGBT Switchboard, are holding information event for any LGBT people living in Brighton and Hove affected by eating disordersYou can register for the event by emailing Sam here.

BHEDS Peer2Peer offer a Peer Support Service involving groups for adults affected by eating disorders in men, women and carers living in Brighton and Hove. Find more information here.

Inside Out- an Older LGBT Housing workshop. 


Switchboard's Older LGBT Project, in association with Stonewall Housing, is holding an older LGBT people's housing workshop on Monday the 16th of March from 10:30am - 3pm. This workshop will work to explore local issues, and is aimed at providers of Housing and Social Care Services, local Older LGBT people and those who are interested in planning services for older people.

Trans Needs Assessment 


The research phase of the Trans Needs Assessment, conducted in partnership by Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard and the University of Brighton, is now complete. Findings are now being compiled and will be made available shortly. We would like to thank everybody who took part in this important and ground-breaking research.

LGBT History Month



February is LGBT History Month and there are events taking place throughout the month to celebrate the history of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender lives and culture across the city of Brighton and Hove and elsewhere. You'll find information on some of these listed below, as well as dates and links to information for others in the event listings.

Rainbow Jews Exhibition Launches in Brighton

 

The Rainbow Jews Exhibition is launching at the Jubilee Library in Brighton on the 2nd of February. Discover how the stories and experiences of LGBTQI Jewish people have shaped British culture from 1950s to today. Explore the truly diverse range of Jewish voices: Ultra-Orthodox lesbians, bisexual rabbis, gay Holocaust survivors and transgender activists.

Trans Voter Registration


The Brighton Trans Alliance and Brighton & Hove City Council are holding an event to support Trans people in Brighton & Hove in registering to vote.
This event will take place on Tuesday the 10th of February at Friends Meeting House from 6-8pm. For more information please contact the Trans Alliance here.

Brighton & Hove LGBT Trust & Confidence Survey



The Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety forum have recently launched the Trust & Confidence Survey 2013/14. This short survey is about your trust in the Police and Council services (including the Partnership Community Safety Team), and your confidence in reporting issues around abuse, discrimination and your safety within Brighton & Hove.

Lesbian Lives Conference



The 22nd Annual Lesbian Lives Conference, ‘Lesbian Feminism/s Now’ will be held on 20-21 February 2015, hosted by University of Brighton LGBT and Queer Life Research Hub in conjunction with Women’s Studies Centre, University College Dublin. MindOut Support Groups

MindOut runs a range of weekly peer support groups  for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer people who have concerns about their mental health.
Work it Out  - for people  juggling mental health concerns with paid employment
Out of the Blue – for people who have experience of suicidal thoughts or suicidal distress
Queer Identities – for people who identity as queer in relation to their gender and, or their sexuality
Men’s Group – for Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer men
Women’s Group – for Gay , Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans and Queer women
UNDR30’s – for  young people under 30
Open Group – a weekly drop-in

Time to Talk Day


MindOut are offering free tea and cake at the LoveFit Cafe from 2-6pm on Time to Talk Day, Thursday 5th February. Come and have tea and cake with us and chat to one of our volunteers with lived experience of mental health issues. First come, first served until the tea and cake runs out.

Clinic T



Have you heard about Clinic T?

Clinic T is a specialist Sexual Health Clinic run especially for Trans* people.
Friendly trained staff can offer you an HIV test and a full sexual health screen, as well as answering any questions and queries you might have.

Clinic T runs once every 12 weeks on a Wednesday evening, the next date is scheduled for 4th March 2015

Trans Swimming



 
Trans Swimming has now returned to its original venue at St Luke's Swimming Pool after an extensive refurbishment. Open to all Trans people or anyone whose gender expression has been keeping them from swimming and their invited guests.

BLAGSS Annual Bowling Extravaganza



On the 24th of February, Brighton Lesbian and Gay Sports Society will be holding their 10th annual Bowling Extravaganza at the Bowlplex, Brighton Marina. Last year there were more than 200 participants in different teams from various LGBT community groups in Brighton & Hove.
This event promises a "serious" competition, sweat, excitement, but most of all, fun.

Registration is at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
