The Future of Manufacturing

Manufacturing has always been and remains one of bedrocks of America’s prosperity, culture, and continued economic growth. We are now in the 15th year since the turn of the Millennium. Although the world economy is undergoing tremendous change there continues to be high demand and heavy emphasis for manufactured goods. Further, US-based manufacturing has not disappeared; rather it is undergoing a strategic and sustainable resurgence. Through the integration of advanced technologies, new processes and systems, development of talent, and other solutions, America’s manufacturing sector is undergoing a transformation to be leaner, greener, and more competitive than ever before.

Since being founded in 1977 Harbec has been steadily earning its place as a premier manufacturing solutions company. In 2014 Harbec had one of its most successful years to date. Harbec has achieved sustainable growth for nearly forty years by reinvesting in infrastructure, people, and technology. Although Harbec’s formula for business success may appear simple, executing a long-term strategy requires incredible vision, teamwork, ingenuity, and tenacity. In short, success in manufacturing requires an ability to plant and nurture seeds, and the know-how to harvest the crops when they are ready. Success in manufacturing requires holistic systems-level thinking and an innate ability to sense the near future of market and customer needs. But being aware of the market and customers is not enough. The best manufacturers also have to bring the best solutions.

This lead-off Solutions Newsletter for 2015 focuses on the power of planting seeds for the future, in particular, how and why Harbec is collaborating with regional High School and Middle School technology programs to accelerate student’s exposure and awareness of manufacturing careers, and in pursuit of training the next generation skilled toolmaker.

January’s Solutions Newsletter also formally announces the launch of Harbec’s refreshed website. As shown in the graphic, Harbec’s updated website more transparently highlights its manufacturing solutions, pursuit of innovation, and long-term commitment to achieve sustainable business solutions for employees, customers, and community.

The Future of Manufacturing: Driving Capabilities, Enabling Investments

The Future of Manufacturing: Driving Capabilities, Enabling InvestmentsThe manufacturing sector needs to move into a more proactive strategic approach to meet key challenges such as demographic shifts in the consumer market, skills gap and technological innovations. The emergence of global value chains has transformed the manufacturing ecosystem by making each component, from research and development, to fabrication, distribution and marketing more interdependent. Skills and talent improvement, innovations, industrial policy and resource efficiency are four areas which are in the common interest of government, the private sector and society. It is critical to address this convergence of interests because overlooking an advanced manufacturing strategy could lead to a lack of competitiveness within manufacturing value chain.

I Don’t Want To Go To College
(An Open Letter)

Dear Mom and Dad,
You might want to sit down before reading any further. I’m writing you this letter because I couldn’t bear to see the looks on your faces when I say what I need to. It’s about my future.
I know that you love me and only want what’s best for me. And I understand the pressures that you’re facing, considering what everyone else’s kids are doing. But you’ve always taught me that just because everyone is doing it, doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea.
So, here’s what I have to say…
I don’t want to go to college.
