February 2015
Dear Remembering Not to Forget Supporters,

Back in September we told you that, thanks to all of you, we’d smashed our original £10,000 fundraising target and raised over £12,000. We can confirm that the total income for 2014 was £12,502.31 before Gift Aid - and it’s all because of you!

Thank you so much to all of you who donated money, attended our events, took part in their own activities or simply said ‘well done’. We thank you all – we are further along our journey of supporting people living with dementia and their families, and we could not have done it without you. You are amazing!

We had planned to distribute the funds by the end of 2014 but this has been delayed, so we’re in the process of giving out the money now.
Read about where the money you helped us raise is going – we’ll be adding more details as we receive them.

We've been doing a few updates to our website, including adding some more detail about the inspiration for setting up Remembering Not to Forget.

We've also set up a new blog area on the website; alongside fundraising to support people impacted by dementia, one of the aims of Remembering Not to Forget is to get people talking about dementia more openly, and for people to be aware that it’s possible to live well with dementia for a long time.

This blog will help us to do this, as well as being a space for us to share other stories and updates in between newsletters. Take a look at the first entry.

People who have done more than dug deep!

Remembering Not to Forget has some avid supporters who have shown great generosity during our 14 months of existence. However, there have been some who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. You may remember our feature on Heidi and Simon last year – check out their stories here.
In addition to this, West Hampstead hockey player, Phil Crisp, decided to celebrate his 30th birthday by having a full body wax (if you don’t believe us check out the videos on Phil's fundraiser website!) – he raised more than £2000 for us which we are eternally grateful for. Thanks Phil!
Without people like Heidi, Phil and Simon we wouldn't be able to have the impact we are in making a difference to people living with dementia.
Therefore this is a plea to you to join our supporters and raise sponsorship for us in 2015! Just like Jo who is running the London Marathon in April.

We can offer you a dedicated web page where people can donate and all your friends and family can see how well you’re doing, if you’re taking part in an event we can provide you with Remembering Not To Forget shirts, badges and stickers and we are always on hand to offer you help and support.

We can also say thank you with a one year subscription to Headspace, who make meditation simple and provide a gym for your brain!

What’s next…

So whilst we are planning on having a less intense year than we did in 2014 that does not mean we are sitting back and doing nothing! Laura and Jon have already started their first challenge which is to run at least 1 mile every day for the whole year. With January bringing temperatures below freezing it hasn’t been easy. A few Bambi on ice moments were encountered.

We’re also planning:
  • a skydive in April – we won’t say much more about that for now as some members of the team are absolutely dreading it!
  • a quiz in Somerset in the spring and then another one in London in the autumn – more details to follow.
  • another triathlon in June
  • a Tough Mudder event in October.
If any of our events grab your interest and you fancy joining us then why not get in touch or you can donate online to support our efforts here.

Remembering Not to Forget in the Community

When we set up Remembering Not to Forget we were keen to do more than just raise money – we wanted to support our local communities in raising the profile of dementia and the challenges that people face when affected by the condition.

As part of this, in November Laura and Ali paid a visit to Taunton’s ‘Memory Café’ which is a support group run by the Alzheimer’s Society and one of the recipients of Remembering Not to Forget funds.

Laura and Ali talked about their 10 challenges in 10 months and explained why it was such an important cause for them. Ali's mum has been a regular at the group for a couple of years, and after the talk Laura and Ali got to spend some time with some of the other attendees (people living with dementia and their carers) and hear more about how important organisations like Memory Cafe and Remembering Not to Forget are to them.

In addition to the ‘Memory Café’ talk, Laura and Ali will be running Dementia Friends sessions in London and Bournemouth. Dementia Friends seeks to make our communities more dementia friendly, including providing training to help better support people living with dementia. We’ll let you know dates as soon as we can but if you’re interested in attending then contact us or to find out more about Dementia Friends click here.
