NPRN Shorts:

1. An NPRN user has volunteered to host a forum to discuss Donor Perfect software. Private message her if interested (@brittanyavila). Another user, @LoaCom has started an NPRN group called Donor/Database Software Users designed for people to share their findings, thoughts, recommendations and questions around the use of various donor software programs.

2. 2015 Gates Annual Letter: Every year philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates write an annual letter, laying out a strategy for eliminating poverty and suffering in the world. Beautifully presented, here is their prediction for 2030. Their biggest bet? The lives of people in poor countries will improve faster in the next 15 years than at any other time in history.

3. Women's Leadership Summit: Center For Nonprofit Management. Hear from inspiring and high-powered women who lead successful organizations and walk away with powerful strategies for working smarter, and cultivating support among your network. February 24, 20159:30am  – 2:30pm. Registration Fee: $125. For a limited time, bring a friend and get half off.

4. Resource of the Week: Leading With Intent: A National Index of Nonprofit Board Practices. This resource is a comprehensive scan of nonprofit board practices, policies, and performance. Building on data that BoardSource has collected and analyzed dating back to 1994, this report is a powerful window into current board leadership and trends. While there is lots of good news to share, the bottom line is that nonprofit leaders give noprofit boards a “B minus” grade in overall performance. Leading with Intent explores why that is, and — more importantly — what we can do about it. BoardSource views Leading with Intent as a call to action and lays out a number of strategies to significantly improve nonprofit boards.

The Sandler Way: Where Big Philanthropy Meets the Art of Common Sense

If you hang around the more professionalized precincts of philanthropy—like big name foundations with their armies of Ph.D.s or major consulting firms—the business of giving away large amounts of money can seem awfully complicated. (Hence all those Ph.D.s.)  But if you talk with Herb Sandler, as I did recently, it sounds pretty darn simple. More here.

New President for Planned Parenthood

Jenna Tosh recently became the new leader for the tri-counties Planned Parenthood branch, replacing longtime president Cheryl Rollings. With her, Tosh, 31, brings experience heading the Orlando affiliate, where she oversaw 69 staff and a $5 million budget. In charge of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo, Tosh — who holds a PhD in public policy, which she focused on teen pregnancy — will see her staff nearly double (120) and her budget more than triple ($16 million). More here.

Technology Start-Ups Don’t Hold All the Answers for ‘Broken’ Nonprofits

For the 13 years I have worked in philanthropy, I have heard again and again the same sweeping generalizations about the supposed ineffectiveness of the nonprofit sector—typically followed by a pronouncement that the answer lies in "business thinking" or acting "like a start-up." It has become downright tiresome. More here.
