FEBRUARY 2015 - BEND 2030 VISION NEWS

MESSAGE
FROM THE CHAIR

by Vic Martinez

As the new Bend 2030 Chair, I am very fortunate to follow the momentum established by our past chair, Betsy Warriner. Her leadership allowed Bend 2030 to establish strong ties with our community partners and our Leadership Alliance. My goal this year is to collaborate closely with organizations that align with the Bend 2030 Vision. Through these partnerships we can leverage our strength and better fulfill the Vision that was established by our community in 2006.

One of the benefits of the Leadership Alliance support is that Bend 2030 has been able to hire a part-time Interim Executive Director, Erin Foote Marlowe. With her direction, there’s a lot we will accomplish in 2015. For instance, we will continue with our Livability Series Forums. The first forum, on Housing Affordability, took place in the fall of 2014. The second forum, planned for April 11, will address transportation issues facing the future of Bend. Our third forum will focus on higher education and be held in the fall. All these topics are closely tied to a diverse and livable community—and the Vision. We will take our findings, adopt recommendations and present those recommendations to City and County decision makers.

It is important that community members get involved at some level—whether it’s completing a questionnaire, spreading the word or volunteering for the Bend 2030 forums. Another way is to review the Vision Statement on our website, www.bend2030.org. Let us know what you think!

THE SIX VISION FOCUS AREAS

1.  Well-Planned City
2.  Vibrant Economy
3.  Quality Environment
4.  Strong Community
5.  Safe, Healthy People
6.  Creative, Learning Culture

HOW WILL WE GET THERE? SAVE THE DATE!

Mark your calendars for April 11 for the Bend 2030 Transportation Forum (details to follow).

Our forum planning committee is reaching out to more than two-dozen transportation stakeholders to determine our greatest transportation challenges and the solutions for solving them. We'll take this info to you for your input through the April 11 forum and then a survey. Stay tuned!

NEW STAFF AND BOARD MEMBERS

Building on the momentum of its Livability Series and the support of the Leadership Alliance, Bend 2030 has hired an interim executive director, elected a new chair and appointed five new board members, each with broad knowledge of key sectors and strong networks across the community.

Erin Foote Marlowe—a former journalist, administrator at Central Oregon Community College and owner of a local communications, political and fundraising consulting firm—has been tapped to serve as the organization’s first executive director while Marika Yuma will continue to serve as the group’s project manager. HOUSING AFFORDABILITY  SURVEY RESULTS UPDATED

Bend 2030 has released an amended version of its Housing Affordability Report to reflect a change in the results of one question on a recent housing affordability survey. The group’s overall recommendations on solutions to the housing affordability crisis remain unchanged.  Read on for more...

THANK YOU TO OUR FRIENDS!

We express our appreciation for Moe Carrick of Moementum and ML Vidas of Vidas Architecture, and also Audrey Allen of Allen Design Studio, Steven Ames of Steven Ames Planning, Dona Evans and Savanna Jones for their time and efforts toward making the Housing Affordability project a success.

Also, our heartfelt thanks go to Betsy Warriner of Volunteer Connect for her wonderful service as the 2012-14 Board of Directors Chair and Jodie Barram for her extensive contributions, leadership and hard work on behalf of Bend 2030 since 2005, when the Bend 2030 process got its start.

The Vision is becoming a reality thanks to organizations and individuals like the ones listed above!
