The weekend every American and perhaps nine Swedes have been waiting for is finally here, Super Bowl Weekend! The 49th annual Super Bowl will be a game of football between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. But even though the game itself may be in focus, with over six hours of pre-game analysis, a lot of the talk is, as always, about the entertainment and commercials. This year Katy Perry together with Lenny Kravitz have the honor of performing at halftime.

The commercial slots have only grown bigger over the years and this year NBC, the network televising the Super Bowl, set the price for a 30-second commercial to 4,5 million dollars, beating previous years' records. This year, as previous years as well, many of the slots have been bought by film studios to promote upcoming potential blockbusters. This year will feature trailers for movies such as Jurassic World (Universal), Terminator Genisys (Paramount) and Tomorrowland (Disney). And if you by any chance miss a certain commercial, NBC will post the commercials on a Tumblr account live during the game. There is no way to miss it! So load up your favorite snacks, tune in and enjoy what could be the biggest televised event of the year!

Interview with Caroline Ingvarsson

Last week at the final weekend of the Scandinavian Film Festival in Los Angeles the young and talented Caroline Ingvarsson received her Grant from SWEA for her short film "The Dog Walker". SACC-LA's Marketing Managers where at the Film Festival and managed to get a short interview with the director.

How long have you been in L.A. now?
I’ve only been here for four days, so I’m still very new in town.

Have you managed to get a picture of the film industry here yet and how it works?
Not during these four days, I haven’t. But I was here last summer at the Palm Spring Film Festival with the same short film. I got to meet a lot of film people during the festival, so I’ve got a hunch of it, but I definitely want to develop a greater knowledge of it.

Is L.A. ”the dream”?
Well, it depends. In Sweden we have governmental funding, which is great. Unfortunately I don’t know too much about how it works here in the U.S. but I’ll have to look in to that. If there are similar possibilities this ”dream” could be quite nice!

Your short film, ”The Dog Walker”. Why did you start producing it?
The film is actually about my parents’ dog walker, whom I met once when I picked up the dog. Lars Gunnar Persson, the dog walker, was a famous follies artist in Sweden back in the 50’s and 60’s but today he is a man living merely on his memories, very lonesomely contemplating having left those memories behind.

So the only ones he can talk to are the dogs he walks. Conversing with them about the past and promises, things that happened or didn’t happen. He has a thousand stories to tell but no one but the dogs to tell them too. That is why I wanted to share him with everyone else.

What is on your schedule now?
Next up is this opportunity that SWEA has given me, to stay in Los Angeles for three months and work full time on my documentary ”Folded letters”. I will at the same time receive mentoring from different directors based in L.A. who will help me with the project throughout the three months. A side from that I am planning on writing my next short film. But we’ll see how much I’ll have time for. But for now, I’m very excited!

Interview with Photographer Frank af Petersens

"The Poaching Wars" is an exhibition in Santa Monica that opened last Saturday January 24, and will run through February and March. Frank af Petersens invited us to tell us, but most of all show us, the story he means to tell.

Your exhibition ”The Poaching Wars” opened last Saturday, January 24th in Santa Monica. Could you tell us what it is about?

The exhibition is a crossover fine art and documentary photography exhibition about the rapidly escalating elephant and rhino poaching crisis in Africa. I’m a firm believer in the power of beauty, and showing large fine art prints of elephants and rhinos in their natural habitat is a more effective way of raising awareness of what we are on the brink of losing forever, than a brutal pure documentary show with only slaughtered animals. There are some fairly shocking photos in the exhibition, but what visitors take with them is more of the sublime experience of seeing these fantastic animals alive.

A vital part of the exhibition is centered on the wildlife rangers who risk their lives on a daily basis trying to protect Africa’s last rhinos and the rapidly shrinking elephant herds. It’s a battle against overwhelming odds. Almost 100 elephants are killed by poachers every day in Africa, and a rhino is shot every 8 hours.

It will be for show from now on and through February and March. Do you have any certain goal with the exhibition?

The primary goal is to raise awareness of this urgent issue. Despite frequent media reports on the poaching crisis, there is little real awareness of the extremely short time frame left before these two iconic species are gone forever.  There are many countries involved in the illegal ivory and rhino horn trade, but if we can stop or drastically reduce demand in China, it would be an enormous win.

However, short term we need to raise substantial funds for anti poaching work on the frontline in the African bush.

I work as a volunteer photographer for several organizations, including Wildlife Conservation Network, Save The Elephants, The Thin Green Line Foundation and International Anti-Poaching Foundation. I also work as a volunteer directly with national parks and conservancies in Africa to help them build image banks for marketing, communication and fundraising. Most recently I spent three weeks in northern Kenya helping Save The Elephants build a new image bank, and donated over 500 images at the end of
my stay there. I finance this work by selling fine art prints at my exhibitions, so naturally I hope that the exhibition also attracts buyers who want to support this cause and have a tangible reminder of the beauty of wild elephants and rhinos on their wall.

Is there any specific reason for why you are showing it here? Why did you want to do it in Los Angeles?

In May 2014 I was asked to contribute large photos to a fundraising event in Malibu, for the benefit of the Elephant Crisis Fund. It was sponsored by Leonardo DiCaprio, among others, and was a huge success. The event raised over $2 million, which has helped buy vehicles and other vital equipment for rangers units in Africa. This event opened up a lot of contacts, and it seemed like a good idea to do an exhibition here. Gallery 169 is an ideal venue, and the owner Frank Langen is deeply concerned about the poaching crisis. He has been extremely supportive in setting up and launching the exhibition.

You don’t have the average photographer’s background. Please tell us how you got into photography.

I have always been interested in photography, but for many years I just had it as a hobby while working with a wide range of things. I was an officer in the army for several years, got a degree from Handelshögskolan in Stockholm, worked for an international strategy consulting firm and in investment banking. About 10 years ago I took the plunge and took up professional photography, and decided to focus my work on Africa. I grew up in east Africa, and got hooked on the landscape, the wild animals and the people at a very early age. Once you start to spend time in Africa, you really can’t avoid the poaching crisis. It’s such a huge disaster, and it’s happening right now. I felt I had to tell the story in images, and especially highlight the situation of the people on the frontline in the many ongoing small bush wars.

Your focus has been on Africa the last few years. Will that continue or are you planning on moving in different directions as well?

No, I have no intention of covering other regions. Africa is where my heart is, and it is such a huge and diverse continent that you can spend a lifetime covering the multitude of stories there, and still only scratch the surface.

If you only had one afternoon to spend in LA, how would you spend it?

Sitting under the tree in the yard at Gjusta in Venice, enjoying their food and superb cortado coffee. It’s a great place.
