Reflections From a Former Intern....

I heard about IC towards the end of high school. I found that members of IC are doing their best to follow Jesus’ commands to love and pursue those that the world has cast aside. After my freshman year in college, I was longing for the opportunity to practice and live out the values and faith God had been stirring in my heart. I participated in my first summerXchange internship in Boston that summer.

In Boston, I had the opportunity to live in community and work with several local organizations addressing the needs of the poor, including a day center for the homeless and community artists. I loved my time in Boston, so the following year I participated in summerXchange again, this time working with the San Francisco Outer Circle team who spends their time with traveling street youth. During this internship I joined 2 members from the Outer Circle team along with another intern. We traveled the West coast in an RV. We visited a lot of the destinations that many of the homeless youth of the west coast frequent. We made connections with youth and local ministries in towns and cities along the coast. As an anthropology major, my journal became an amateur ethnography of traveling street youth!

More important than places I visited or the experiences I had, InnerCHANGE taught me about a healthy posture of the heart and rhythms of life. Through meeting regularly with mentors, creating space for silence and solitude, and learning about and participating in communal life, I developed a strong foundation of values that I’ve continued to build my life around. In college I was reading and studying about the idea of Christ’s “upside down kingdom,” and during my internships with IC, all that I was reading about on pages was brought to life in a real and powerful way. I was called to consider what it physically looked like to live a life committed to humility, simplicity, and honesty. As I live and work in a low-income neighborhood of Chicago with my husband today, I still consider myself a part of the InnerCHANGE family. I reach out to them for advice, prayer, and solidarity. My time spent with them over 7 years ago continues to form who I am today.
