On Wednesday, January 7 our Villaways community was able to take a trip down to Toronto City Hall and see their artwork on display, celebrate their achievements and receive a tour of City Hall from Councillor Shelley Carroll as well as showing off their artwork to Mayor John Tory - watch the video by clicking above!

Art Starts Micro-grants are BACK! 

2014 micro-grant recipient Ananna Rafi and the youth artists she worked with for her project 

We're very excited to announce the recipients of the 2014-15 Toronto Art Council micro-grants through the Platform A Initiative. Art Starts was thrilled to be able to offer an additional 4 micro-grants this cycle bringing the number of projects funded to 12. Here are a list of the recipeients and a bit about their upcoming projects! Read more about last year's micro-grant projects on our Platform A website - www.platformatoronto.com

Janiece McIntosh - A series of workshops learning about cultural and tribal & indigenous jewelry, fashion, make- up art and hairstyles culminating in a celebration event of a Feast to Our Ancestors.
Jaicyea Smith - Belly dancing workshops for young women addressing, health, wellness and body image issues in the Lawrence Heights community.
Adam Cohoon – Photography series addressing issues of physical barriers across Toronto from the point of view of a wheelchair.
Juan Carbonell - A group of newcomers who met learning ESL and bonded over their love of art and will start a newcomer artist collective where they can meet, create together and showcase their work. 
Poonam Sharma - A workshop series of portrait painting by youth in underserved communities with high immigrant populations focusing on the beauty in diversity in their communities. 
Elliot Pines - The creation of a new media video game that narrates the experiences of queer, trans, and mentally ill people in a way to engage people and hopefully educate people on these issues.
Kassandra Prus - Mind/body creative workshops to engage youth in the LGBTQ community in acceptance of their identities and the importance of self-care. 
Marjan Verstappen - Sculptural nest building workshops with kids and youth to address urban ecology and bird habitat along the waterfront
Cassandra London – Youth lead radio series addressing issues of race and politics and the importance of the voice of youth in mainstream media.
Ashley Bratty - An interactive and participatory mural inside of the Redwood Women's Shelter addressing mental health issues
Svitlana Ivchenko - A newcomer herself wants to facilitate a multi-generational quilt making project with other newcomers in her community.
Candice Botha - Creation of a short film showcasing the societal hierarchies stacked against people with disabilities, while networking with artists in the hopes of creating a Disabled Film Makers Collective.

Art Starts micro-grants are part of the Platform A initiative that was developed in line with the Toronto Arts Council’s strategic priorities to enhance support for Community Connections in local and youth-based arts delivery, and foster increased Innovation and Partnerships that will incubate new ideas and opportunities across all disciplines.
