Millbrook Arts Group
Winter Concert Series

Uncommon Ground
February 21 at 5 pm

Our Winter Concert Series sponsored by the Millbrook Arts Group continues in February with the folk and bluegrass band Uncommon Ground. The group brings together the unlikely combination of precise, classically trained violin and bass lines with the soul of bluegrass-influenced vocals, mandolin and guitar to drive a band whose fresh, distinctive sound is winning fans wherever they perform.

Uncommon Ground draws on the talents of Mike Kobetitsch, and Wayne Fugate, both long-time veterans of the Bluegrass scene, and the ever amazing Rachel Handman and Phil Helm, two principles in the Hudson Valley Philharmonic.

Refreshments provided by Coach’s.

Upcoming Performers

March 21 at 5 pm: Helen Avakian and Terry Champlin
The Winter Concert Series is made possible by a generous contribution from the HW Wilson Foundation.

Color for Residential Interiors

For most people, choosing paint colors can be overwhelming.  This presentation includes over 50 examples of how and how not to use color. Explore both the science and art of proper color application and an exploration of the profound emotional, psychological and physiological effects that color has on all of us.

Amy Krane, founder of Amy Krane Color, is trained by the International Association of Color Consultant/Designers of North America and was selected as “Best of HOUZZ 2014.”  She is a regular contributor on Luminary Publishing’s Upstater.com  and is featured in the Winter issues of both Hudson Valley Magazine and Home Depot’s in-house magazine, InPaint .

Off The Wall Gallery February Display

Laura Hammond Toonkel
During the month of February, The Millbrook Library Gallery will be showing the work of local artist Laura Hammond Toonkel from her series called “The Witness Series.”  It includes drawings, encaustic paintings and intaglio prints that investigate contrasts in the subject matter based on the passage of time, seasons, and environmental changes. Toonkel has been painting scenes of Dutchess County and Millbrook for over 20 years and many of the images represent vistas that she finds right in her backyard. Toonkel’s work shows her passion for the environment and the need to protect it.  She was a contributor to a book called “Voices from the Land “by Chelsea Green, which promotes land conservation awareness.  Toonkel’s work illustrates how things in the environment change.

Toonkel received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and her MFA from Pennsylvania State University.  She currently teaches at Marist College in Poughkeepsie NY, where she is also the Director of Art Internships.

The work by Laura Hammond Toonkel will be on display from Wednesday February 4th until the end of the month.  There will be a gallery talk by Toonkel on Saturday, February 21st during the Millbrook Arts Group Winter Concert Series.

Thursday, Feb. 19 & Friday, Feb. 20 from 3 pm - 5 pm

In this two-part workshop, youth learn to recognize the role that media plays in shaping their lives by applying basic media literacy principles to advertisements in order to decode them. Participants will script out messages that “talk-back” to the ads. Then they will get hands-on use of audio-video equipment to produce stop-motion animation to deconstruct and critique the ads using the same techniques/persuasive tools as the originals. The teens will create “Talk-back” ads synthesizing print media, radio and video formats.

This program is free – registrants must attend both sessions.

To register, Call Spark Media Project (845) 485-4480
