Becoming Wolf: the Eastern Coyote in New England

The Friends of Madison Library will host an informative and timely illustrated talk, “Becoming Wolf: the Eastern Coyote in New England” on Tuesday, February 17 at 7:00 PM in the John F. Chick Room at the Madison Library. (Snow date is Tuesday, February 24.)

Chris Schadler (MS, MA), wild canid ecologist and Project Coyote’s New Hampshire and Vermont representative, will present. Beginning in the early 1990's, Chris taught Conservation Issues and Wolf Ecology at the University of New Hampshire, receiving many teaching excellence and student recognition awards. She continues to instruct and mentor adult degree candidates in the UNH System at Granite State College.

Wolf recovery was the focus of Schadler’s early work, but her attention shifted to the eastern coyote when she moved to New England. She chose a farm with known coyote problems to raise sheep and train border collies. Using sound livestock management and common sense, she has avoided any predation for nearly two decades.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow the presentation.

Collecting Oral Histories

We’re looking for people interested in collecting oral histories for our Madison Library Local History Project. Please join us on Wednesday, February 11 at 4 pm in the library’s John F. Chick Room for an informational meeting.
Volunteers are needed to:
  • Tell their stories
  • Conduct interviews
  • Help with recording and post-production of recorded interviews
We will discuss topics that would be good ones for oral history interviews, and go over the types of volunteer tasks involved with this project. We will also collect names of local people willing to be interviewed. Training will be scheduled at a later date for interviewers and for people interested in learning how to work on recordings.

Junior Makerspace: Robots!

Kids age 8 and up are invited to come to our second Junior Makerspace event on Friday, February 20 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm (that’s during school vacation).

NH State Library recently invested in a variety of “makerplay” equipment for libraries to borrow for fun, educational programs.

At this program, we will have two of their programmable Rover robots to play with. We’ll learn how they work, then build obstacle courses for the robots, form teams and race them.

Pen & Paper Journaling Workshop

journalWe have rescheduled this workshop from January 30, when it was snowed out.

Please join us on Friday, February 20 at 6 pm, when Peggy Johnson will lead a workshop on journaling, for adults, teens, and kids age 11 and up. Peggy has been keeping a journal for years, will discuss the benefits of journaling, and share her tips on making journaling a regular practice. See some examples of different types of journals (art journals, birding journals, reading journals), and we'll even have some blank journals for you to choose from so you can get started.

A soup and bread supper will be included. Call ahead to register for this workshop, 367-8545.
