Auditions - "War of the Worlds"
The cast will only be required to learn the song lyrics but no dialogue (except for Parson, Beth and Artilleryman who have spoken lines within their songs).
Pre-recorded music will be provided to allow for practice at home rather than rehearsing with an orchestra. As a result there will be a brief rehearsal period and no significant costuming required as this is a concert version.
All the songs are contained within the movie which is projected on to
a large screen with the singers and dancers performing live on stage as required.
There are additional songs to those in the Jeff Wayne soundtrack. Most of these are
from David Essex who played the Artilleryman character in the original version.
This is a relatively small cast of fifteen with seven singers and eight dancers required.
Singers Required
Narrator: (Male 18-50) The voice of the Narrator who is the central character.
He is the newspaper reporter who recounts the story from his first hand experiences. The movie follows his story as he tries to reunite with his wife.
Artilleryman: (Male 16-30) Dialogue within song and choreography required. A young man who survives the Martians first attack at Horsell Common. He emerges in the Second Act as
a dreamer who has allusions of grandeur in “Brave New World”.
Carrie: (Female 18-50) Sings two duets with Narrator which are not from the Jeff Wayne soundtrack.
She is separated early from her husband when the Martians first attack. She escapes to
France with her cousins.
Parson Nathaniel: (Male 25-65) Duet with Beth in “The Spirit of Man”. Quite a major character in the movie who questions what this invasion is all about. He is convinced that mankind has brought this calamity upon themselves and doesn’t understand that the invaders are aliens rather than demons from Hell.
Beth: (Female 18-50) The wife of the Parson Nathaniel who has died but appears as a ghost
trying to comfort her troubled husband in “The Spirit of Man”.
Ogilvy: (Male 30-65) The first person to see the cylinder and to try and communicate with the visitors from Mars. Solo “Astronomy”.
Voice of Humanity: (Male 18-50) Leads “Thunderchild” song. Describes the epic battle between the last remaining ship and the tripods to save the steamer.
Dancers Required (8 parts available)
Female or male over 16. Contemporary style. Previous experience with contemporary dance and improvisation needed. No singing required.
