Bring back the sun.

Here we are, the first day of the new month and the cold wet winter has returned. After almost two weeks of glorious sun and temps up to 72 degrees, this feels like a betrayal. I planned to plant my onion sets this morning, and to cut my seed potatoes and let them sit and grow some eyes, but the rain and wind have me stuck indoors.

Ick.

I planted greens and carrots in the cold frame and hoop house last weekend. I set a flat of pots in the cold frame and planted tomato and pepper seeds: Roma tomatoes, pablano, green bell and jalapeno peppers. I need to go check and see if they've sprouted little leaves yet. I'm almost hoping they haven't... poor things wouldn't like this cold!

While planting I pulled a few beautiful carrots! They're looking really good and they taste like candy.

In other big news, I got a KitchenAid this week! I've been having so much fun making things in a real mixer and it doesn't take much for the kids to convince me that we really ought to make some cinnamon rolls or cookies. :)

Fermenting Update

The kraut I started 2 weeks ago was looking so good! I've been peeking in on it every time I do laundry. Yesterday I went to check on it and one of the jars had been knocked over, the airlock came out and the kraut lost it's brine. The other was no longer covered in brine. How this happened I have no idea. The jars were on a shelf above my head and we don't have a cat! What could have overturned a jar???? Anyway, I threw the contents out because I was worried about the lack of bring and the fact hat the knocked over one had been exposed to the air when the airlock came out.

The apples are looking good! Sometime this week I'll strain them and set the liquid to ferment some more. And since I'm dehydrating apple slices this week thanks to a good deal I found on 20lb of organic apples I'm going to have a lot of peels and cores I can use to start another batch or two!

What are working on this week? Reply and let me know!

Until next week,
Erica
