The Modern Day Deities Project
Chanting has been an incredibly powerful practice in our lives. When we chant the name of a deity, we are calling in the energy that that deity represents. The chanting of these sacred names connects us to remembrance (smaranam) - a remembrance of who we really are and who we want to be in the world. These deities are not separate from us - they are all just aspects of each of us. Still, it's not easy to live from a place of love, generosity, acceptance, truth, honesty, balance, courage, and grace at all times. So we want to honor the people who we feel are actively embodying these qualities and who are bringing hopeful and positive change to our world - to inspire ourselves and others to take the fruits of our spiritual practice out of the studio/sangha and out into the world to make positive change!
Every couple of weeks starting in March (through social media: Instagram, Twitter & Facebook) we will present a new Deity and the people who we believe are embodying this God/Goddess’ energy and using it to make the world a better place. Here’s how you can be involved:
-
Do your own research and share what you know
-
Use this as an opportunity to learn more about different deities and how they can support your spiritual practice and life
-
Join in the conversation by adding your own “modern day deities” and telling the world about the amazing work they are doing
- Talk to your friends and family about this project and the actions you personally want to take - become a modern day deity yourself!
We hope this will be a way to initiate conversation, to bring god/spirit more fully into our everyday lives, and to inspire each other to take more direct action in creating the world that we want!

About KSR
Kirtan Soul Revival (KSR) is New York City’s funkiest devotional mantra music experience. They use traditional Sanskrit mantras, original music, spirituals and music from around the world to create a unique, dynamic sound that merges funk, rock, rhythm and blues, world grooves, and chants. Lush three-part harmonies add fullness and depth to their sound. Kirtan is a celebration of spirit through the chanting of sacred names. KSR invites their audiences to participate fully through call-and-response chanting. Through KSR’s simple presentation, even non-singers can easily experience the joy of being surrounded by harmony in a space that encourages improvisation and exploration. The Kirtan Soul Revival experience invites participants to open their hearts to Spirit and to life!
KSR has led kirtans in and around New York City (including Integral Yoga Institute, Jivamukti Yoga and Laughing Lotus Yoga Center). With 5 successful New England tours and a West Coast tour, they have played numerous times at Kripalu and at festivals such as Wanderlust, BhaktiFest, Ahimsa Yoga & Music Festival, VerMantra, and Berwick Yoga Festival in Nova Scotia. They have recorded with Krishna Das, The Hanumen, Prema Hara and Devadas. KSR’s chant workshops have been offered to groups as large as 120 people. They also teach heart-centered yoga classes infusing flowing vinyasa and breath-centered movement with live music, chanting, and storytelling.
"Kirtan Soul Revival is a fresh and uplifting voice in the world of kirtan music. Vibrant, soul-stirring singing with stellar harmonies and groovin' guitar-- KSR will make your heart smile."
Sean Johnson, kirtan artist
