February is Library Lovers’ Month!

February is Library Lovers’ Month, so why not show love to your local library? Libraries are a place to find the latest bestseller, or information for your research. We are also a gathering place and host of many great events throughout the year, from concerts, to lectures, to informative programs. We also have computers for our patrons to use and eBooks that you can download. Whatever it is that you use the library for, take a minute this month to stop by any of the reference desks to let us know what you enjoy about the library the most and just say “Hi!” Without our patrons, we wouldn’t be where we are today. While you’re here, make sure to take advantage of all of the great services that we have to offer.

Charles Dickens’ Birth Anniversary

Born February 7, 1812, Charles Dickens is widely regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. During his life, many of Dickens’ novels were published in a serialized format, including The Pickwick Papers, Great Expectations and David Copperfield, which allowed Dickens to gauge his audience’s reactions and steer his stories accordingly. Perhaps the work that Dickens is most famous for is the short novel A Christmas Carol, which is still widely loved and adapted today. You can find all of these titles and more, including film and television adaptations of Charles Dickens’ work by visiting the BTPL catalog.

This Month in History: Facebook Launched

While the internet has been in existence for years, the way we interacted with it as users would change forever on February 4, 2004. On this day, Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg, along with several of his classmates launched the social media website Facebook. Initially limited to students of Harvard University, the service quickly spread to college campuses all over the country. Today, anyone over the age of 13 is allowed to register with the website, which provides the opportunity for all of us to stay connected with our friends around the corner or around the globe, as well as reconnect with friends with who we may have lost touch. Currently, there are roughly 1.35 billion users of Facebook worldwide. Visit the library catalog to find books to help you learn how to get started with Facebook.
