Cathy's Corner:
Message from the Superintendent

Our district is committed to moving forward. During the past six months, we have made significant changes in personnel, policy and procedures. This work has been supported by the staff, families and our community. I want to personally thank each person who has worked tirelessly side-by-side with us as we work to maintain an intentional and insistent focus on providing excellent education to the children of Coatesville.

I encourage the community to visit the "Moving Forward" section of the district website, where we will continue to post information to keep you updated on the changes in progress.

– Dr. Cathy Taschner, Superintendent

NOTEWORTHY ITEMS

District signs PHRC agreement promising change
The School Board and Superintendent signed an agreement aimed at curbing discrimination and fostering equal educational opportunity for all. The agreement was crafted by and signed with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC), U.S. Department of Justice, Pennsylvania Center for Safe Schools and NAACP-PA. Read the agreement and the progress made thus far on the recommendations on the CASD website under the "Moving Forward" section.

Preliminary budget available on district website
The preliminary budget assumes a 2.5% tax increase, which equates to about $81 year more per year on a house assessed at $106,000. Every attempt will be made by Administrators and the Board to keep the tax increase as low as possible. As part of these efforts, the Board approved eliminating the position of Capital Projects Manager, a cut that will save about $160,000/year in salary and benefits. The District will host a series of community meetings and will continue to discuss cuts that have already been made as well as what has been done to explore additional sources of revenue. The final budget will not be approved until May or June.

The preliminary budget, one-page information sheet, list of "untouchable" areas that the Superintendent has pledged not to cut and other budget information is available on the CASD website.

Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) conducts technology audit
The audit found that the district's technology is outdated, disorganized and under-utilized. Serious work must be done to bring the district up to pace with neighboring school districts and to provide students with the use of technology that is so integral in today's world. Visit the CASD website to view the Frequently Asked Questions about the audit.
