O, Miami and The Writer's Room at The Betsy are proud to welcome celebrated poet, teacher, and creator of community, William Corbett to Miami.
Over more than four decades, the home of William and Beverly Corbett has fed, housed, and inspired many of the most important contemporary writers and artists. The novelist Paul Auster called the Corbett's former apartment on Columbus Square “the hub, the spiritual heart, the exact center” of literary Boston. Jhumpa Lahiri started writing her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Interpreter of Maladies while house-sitting for the Corbetts. The comedian Denis Leary, a former student of Bill’s, honed his craft in the living room, and their dining room was the poet John Ashbery’s favorite Boston restaurant. (Read this Boston Globe piece for more.)
The Corbetts relocated to Brooklyn in 2012, bringing their mission of nurturing literary community with them, while Bill himself has continued to write and publish. His most recent book of poems is Elegies for Michael Gizzi (Kat Ran Press, 2012), a beautiful tribute to a fellow poet that contains original drawings by Natalia Afentoulidou. He has also published books about the artists Philip Guston, Albert York, and John Raimondi and edited the selected letters of James Schuyler. Since 1999, Corbett has directed Pressed Wafer, a truly extraordinary publishing house small in footprint but massive in ambition.
Corbett will read his work, read the work of poets (Bishop, Schuyler, and Niedecker) who have influenced him, and engage in a Q&A about his life as a organizer, teacher, and publisher.
