Member Spotlight: Nick's Story
by Nick
Recently, Nick, a member of the Clubhouse, shared his thoughts on how being a member has impacted his life. We asked him a few questions and he revealed some insights into his time here at the Clubhouse.
What do you like most about Clubhouse?
It’s just a cool place to come to and make friends with other people who have mental illness. They do a lot here: they have a Business unit here, Wellness, and a Culinary unit which I like to work at. In the Culinary unit, they cook breakfast and lunch from scratch.
Why do you come to the Clubhouse?
I work there and I gain experience. Because of going here I have been able to keep from going to the psych unit, because I use to be going to hospitals every other month. One time I spent close to a month there. Also because you make friends and some of them might come from the hospital. We are all friends here at the Clubhouse. We help everybody as much as we can.
How has Clubhouse impacted your life?
If it wasn’t for this place I would not have graduated from the SA Food Bank Culinary Training, but I did December 5, 2014. Last year we went and saw the Houston Astros play. We got to eat there for free: nachos, hot dogs, chili dogs, and all the free soda you want. Sometimes we will go see a movie. What’s a good thing is this is a nonprofit organization. When I am here I help out with some of the meetings and I try to give to the community with my friendliness. We try to give back what they give to us.
Great job Nick! Keep up the good work!

New Staff Member Spotlight
By Dennis
The San Antonio Clubhouse is experiencing exceptionally high attendance. In order to accommodate the growth, there are new staff members that joined us in the past month. Brandon is a new part-time Staff Generalist whose focus is primarily in the Culinary unit and also shares his unique talents in all areas of the Clubhouse. Dennis, a member at the Clubhouse, sat down with Brandon in this month's Staff Spotlight.
Dennis: What did you do before coming to Clubhouse?
Brandon: I'm fresh out of college and I hope to never make the news. Currently, I'm working on standardizing and revising the graphics for the Clubhouse. I'm also happy to be in San Antonio right now.
Dennis: What excites you most about the Clubhouse?
Brandon: Meeting new people, learning about how the Clubhouse model works where everyone can be themselves.
Dennis: What impact do you want to have on the Clubhouse?
Brandon: I've been here 5 weeks and am trying to work on some compelling duties: cook, work in the kitchen/salad bar, and do some graphic design work. I have 5 years in Architecture school at Syracuse University and have a pretty broad interest in graphic design right now.
Dennis: What hobbies do you have outside of the Clubhouse?
Brandon: I've been into photography for 2-3 years, focusing on landscapes and streets capes. I'm also a fan of portraits.
