Green Market CSA Newsletter #5

Amir's sweet peppers, Chaguanas: "I grew up farming. It's in my blood. Three generations. My mum did the conventional way, taught from her Dad. I took the next step and did my research- shade house and drip irrigation technology. For these peppers, I use neem oil and an organic fungicide- phyton. Bird netting is important- protecting them from the kiskadees, blue jean and big eye grieve. I farm because I love it. I hope the families are happy. It has been done with a lot of love. Savour that taste. It's different, well I think so."

Known as Capsicum annum, add a crunchy texture and burst of colour- red, yellow, green, purple and chocolate brown- to any meal. They start out green then change colour and taste as they ripen on the vine. Excellent sources of antioxidants Vitamins A and B6. Just one small bright pepper gives you 3x your daily requirement of Vitamin C! Their colour comes from carotenoids which helps to improve vision, boost the immune system and fight cancer and heart disease.

The Green Market Standard is underway as the categories come together, farm visits scheduled and the farmers are on board with making this a success! Grown With Love
The Green Market

The Green Market CSA aims to give food a sense of place-where communities pay closer attention to where food is grown and how it reaches the table. People re-discover the "localness" of all that is  around them. Farms, restaurants and families build close relationships, strengthening their local economies and cultural identities for their communities, around food.
