Roots to Transition

We are very keen to find new volunteers, there are a number of exciting new projects in 2015, so if you can spare a few hours (enthusiasm is the only requirement!) please contact us on 01822 820345 or sue@bushpark.co.uk

If you eat you're in!

Join us and help grow a community

Make a note in your diaries ... we're planning a great celebration of local food, getting growing and foraging on Sat. 14th March 2015.

The expert forager and author Chris Holland will be taking us on a short walk around Tavistock, to reveal the abundance on our doorstep. Chris is known for his engaging, lively and interactive walks and talks. There may even be some games along the way! Suitable for all ages. Please bring your children along ... so join us for a spot of lunch, check out our local food suppliers, and for the curious and adventurous, Chris will be cooking up some wild food to taste. Set forth on a foraging adventure, if you wish, and then back for tea and cake.

Inspiring Nicky Scott from Chagford will be joining us to talk about getting our composting right.

Love Food Hate Waste's Andy Barron will be sharing the latest ideas on what to do with surplus food ... and perhaps how to avoid it in the first place!

The Transition Tavistock short AGM will kick off around 15:30, followed by a lively discussion and presentation of our achievements and plans.

So come and join us:
  • 14th March 2015, 12:30 to 16:00
  • The Parish Rooms, Plymouth Road, Tavistock
    • Delicious lunches and refreshments available from 12:30
There is a small charge for the Foraging walk. Book early to avoid disappointment.
Tickets are £4.00 per adult in advance, children free (with accompanying adult); £5.00 on the door.
Contact Sue Hepworth on 01822 820345 or email sue@bushpark.co.uk to reserve spaces.
Tickets will be available from Roots & Vines, Payless and other outlets in Tavistock

Nominations for Committee Members
The current committee must stand down at the AGM and may be re-nominated for the coming year.
The committee would like to receive nominations from anyone interested in participating in the Committee during 2015/2016.
The duties are not onerous and involve attendance at a Committee Meeting each quarter and periodic discussions and preparation if, and when, decisions are required outside meetings.
The positions of Coordinator, Treasurer and Secretary require some additional time aligned to these roles.
We would like to have a Committee of six to twelve members … keeping the amount of work needed to a minimum for everyone but enriching the committee with a broad range of skills and views … as we move forward another year.

Please send your nominations (for yourself and/or others) to info@transitiontavistock.org.uk.

The AGM will be a celebration of our last year … and part of our ‘If You Eat You’re In!’ event. The detailed programme will be available shortly. The outline can be found on our website and in this newsletter.

Many thanks,
The Current Committee

Calling all Horrabridge residents

Have you been encouraged or helped by Horrabridge Energy Savers? Not heard about it?
Either way, please could you complete a short survey and return it. It should only take a few minutes of your time, but it would help us immensely. We can then shape the support you would like to see for yourself and others in the future!
All completed surveys will be entered into a Prize Draw with a chance to win one of two £25 voucher’s which can be spent with a local business of your choice (e.g. Horrabridge Stores, The London Inn, The Leaping Salmon, The Chippie, Buckland Computers, Flowers Going Green, Reflections).

You may have received a survey through the letterbox or complete online using this link. If you need a paper copy give us a ring on 07969-569-444.

Surveys completed online (www.transitiontavistock.org.uk) will be entered into an additional draw for £25 … so complete online and have a chance to win £50.

The draw will be made at Horrabridge Primary School on Friday Feb. 27th at 08:30

Please complete and hand in by end of the day on Saturday 21st February. All completed surveys handed in by this time will be entered into the draw.

Personal Development Days

A new and exciting programme for the region...

Resilience and Reconnection in Challenging Times
• Do you feel as if you are working even harder than ever before?
• Are your struggling to focus on core values and the bigger picture.
• How can connecting with your personal passions and purpose help you in your work?
• Do you want a chance to just stop, reflect and think about what you wish to be
focusing on?
Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day; that “to-do” list just doesn’t end,
the budgets are getting tighter, the demands seem to be increasing, and you wonder what
you are really here for, what is your purpose? Where is your passion? What do you want to
look back on life and feel proud of doing?

These days are about creating a space, to listen, to connect, to support, to share, and to challenge!
Some of the themes we'll be exploring are; Resilience and Reconnection,

Stepping into your Inner Power, and Leadership and Values.
  • 12th March 2015
  • The Bedford Hotel, Tavistock
  • 10am to 3.30pm , £95 (including lunch)
To register for this Personal Development Day, please contact kirsti@actionforsustainability.com or Tel: 07798 676 796. Check out this link for more information.

Final reminder ... Waste Innovation Fund
It’s the second year for this great new fund.
The aim is to inspire and generate innovative or new waste reduction, reuse and recycling initiatives which divert household waste from treatment or disposal by Devon authorities. This £4,000 fund has been designed to stimulate innovation and creativity for Devon wide initiatives and aims to seed and support schemes at community level leading to reduced waste, improved recycling performance or greater participation and awareness of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle).

There will be a Town Shop in Tavistock soon. Is there anything we could do there to encourage recycling? Let us know!

Please share this link with any contacts that may be interested and follow this link;    http://www.recycledevon.org/content/innovation-fund. Applications for the fund must be received by 6th March 2015.

Best regards
Andy Barron (andy.barron@southhams.gov.uk)
Waste Minimisation and Recycling Officer  (Shared).

Your News

Each newsletter we'll include your stories or incidents to inspire and entertain other readers. Please send your stories to info@transitiontavistock.org.uk

A tale of Rocket Mass Heaters, WWOOFers and a plea for bricks!

Two Italian WWOOFers arrived at Nine Acres, our smallholding on the edge of Callington and inspired us to build a Rocket Mass Heater in the old granite cow shed which was to become the venue for our "Back to Basics" craft workshops. Natural dyeing (with plants), spinning, upcycling old furniture with chalk paint, willow work, felting, foraging, soap making and sustainable beekeeping are all on the calendar for 2015. We are offering bed and breakfast too and one day we may be able to serve bread from our very own wood fired bread oven but we are still on the scrounge for bricks. Any offers?
And for your convenience, we are building a tree bog.

Talk about Climate Change with Stuart Scott

Stuart Scott will be speaking at Totnes Methodist Church at 7.30pm on Tuesday 17th in an event organised by South Hams Friends of the Earth and TTT.
Stuart Scott recently presented at UN COP20 in Peru 'Rethinking economics in the age of climate change'
He is the Deputy Director General for the North American Region and Climate Change Issues at IESCO and he undertook Transition training in Totnes.

"There is a natural tendency for humans to be in denial about our own mortality, both individually and collectively. That is, of course, exacerbated by the fossil fuel and other business interests that want to keep us buying stuff, chained to loans, and just generally increasing the wealth of the wealthy and depleting the stocks of natural resources and waste sinks that remain (IF any remain in the case of the atmospheric carbon sink).

But even after we recognise the mortal threat we face, the denial shifts to dejection. That is the part we have to turn into action. And we have to trigger a social tipping point where governments will act on behalf of the well-being of the people."
