When facilitating workshops for middle and high school-aged students, especially girls, I notice a common desire among participants. While unable to fully express themselves, most girls actually want positive, uplifting relationships with other girls.
At Empowered Flower Girl, our goal is to empower those who don’t feel confident enough to break the ice. Most girls have a desire to create lasting bonds, but fear vulnerability. Who can blame them for their hesitation when popular reality TV shows depict women as drama queens engaged in cat fights and backstabbing?
But there’s hope. We can transform the way girls and young women relate to one another. We can be mentors and positive role models.
March is Women’s History Month and I invite you to embrace and promote sisterhood – even if you’re not a woman. Educators and youth advocates are well aware that relational aggression impacts both boys and girls. But for teen girls, who research has shown are twice as likely to develop anxiety and depression, the effects of frenemies and bullies can last well into adulthood.
We will address this and other critical issues impacting girls during our “Mentoring Girls & Inspiring Sisterhood” celebration on Thursday, March 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Skyline Club in Southfield, Michigan. The event features a preview of the documentary Redefining Beauty, chronicling the lives of Detroit-area girls who candidly share their fears, dreams, challenges and hopes.
Empowered Flower Girl is a social enterprise that works with schools, communities and parents seeking solutions to cyberbullying, drama, relational aggression and other social/communications challenges among middle and high school students.

Lead By Example: Being a Role Model to Youth About the Panelist: Laban Reeves is a Program Manager for The Leadership Program. Laban has worked for the company for 8 years providing program design and implementation, staff coaching, and administrative support. Laban has facilitated after school programs and violence prevention workshops for students, parent and family engagement workshops, and professional development workshops for school staff. He has worked as a Site Coordinator and mentor for The Leadership Program’s RISE initiative providing mentoring to over-aged and under-credited students as well as students in temporary housing. Laban has presented keynote addresses and workshops nationally at youth conferences. He endeavors to inspire youth to envision positive change and act boldly to attain it.

The American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) has created a helpful tool to support afterschool system building efforts. “Better Together: A Resource Directory for Afterschool System Builders,” is a comprehensive directory that identifies over 50 organizations that offer resources and tools on afterschool system building. Prep Time: 10 minutes Activity Time: 30 minutes Grade Level: PK-H Group Size: Any Summary/Overview:Every year we ask students from around the country to answer questions to better understand youth perspective and remind us of the importance of our work. Student quotes are then featured on the BOOST Collaborative social media and at the BOOST Conference. Environment: Indoor Materials Needed: Student quote templates that are available for download in PDF format here. Scissors are also needed to cut into half sheets. Preparation: Simply print out the PDF handouts and pass around to your students. Print them out on green paper to make it fun for the month of March with St. Patrick's Day! Activity Directions:
