TELS

(Traveling Evangels of Living Springs)

Thursday, February 12

The Traveling Evangels will visit the State Capital and the Mast General Store on Thursday, February 12.  Both the House & Senate are in session.  After lunch, we will visit the Mast General Store on Main Street (bring funds – there are a lot of neat things).  The bus will depart at 10 am from the LS parking lot and we should be back by 2:30-3 pm.  Contact Beverly Hoppert for information.

Pancake Supper

February 17

Join us on Tuesday, February 17 for our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. Pancakes will be served starting at 6:00 pm by our youth. All proceeds will benefit the youth.  FYI... The word shrove is the past tense of the English verb shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one's sins by way of Confession and doing penance. Thus Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the custom for Christians to be "shriven" before the start of Lent. Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. The liturgical fasting emphasized eating plainer food and refraining from food that would give pleasure.
The burning of the palms will be at around 7:00 pm. (The palm ashes are then used for our Ash Wednesday Service)

“MAKING SENSE OF THE CROSS” Bible Study

Sundays

Adults of all ages - interested in making deeper connections between Scripture and daily life?  On Sunday, Feb. 22, we begin a new Sunday evening Bible Study series for Lent, led by Pastor Eric.   We will use “Making Sense of the Christ,” by renowned Lutheran scholar, Rev. Dr. David Lose (cost is $13).  Please sign up in the narthex or email/call the office by Feb. 12.

Care Meal Cooking

Saturday, February 7

The Fellowship & Mutual Care Team will be cooking and freezing meals that will be used during the next six months for members who are hospitalized or otherwise need a meal.  Members of the Care Meal Teams can use these meals and simply add a salad and/or dessert.  The purpose is to encourage more people to sign up for the teams since they will not have to prepare the entree portion. If you are interested in helping us cook meals, please join us on Saturday, February 7th at 9:00am in the kitchen. For more information, contact Retha Murray

Lessons for Sunday, February 8, 2015

First Reading: Isaiah 40:21–31

The Judeans in exile have a good reason to be hopeful: the one who will bring them to freedom is the God who created the world, the God who subdues the rulers of the earth and gives strength to those who are weary.

Psalm (ELW): Psalm 147:1–11, 20c

The LORD heals the brokenhearted. (Ps. 147:3)

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:16–23

God entrusted Paul with the responsibility of bringing the gospel to diverse people. Hence the focus of Paul's ministry is not his own rights or privileges as an apostle but the privilege of serving God by freely sharing the good news of Christ with others.

Gospel: Mark 1:29–39

Everywhere Jesus goes, many people expect him to set them free from oppression. Everywhere he goes, he heals them and sets them free. Disease, devils, and death are running for their lives. The forces that diminish human life are rendered powerless by Jesus.
