2015 Award Books
The 2015 award announcements came on Monday, February 2, and were eagerly awaited by Youth Services! The Coretta Scott King (Author) Book Award was awarded to Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson. Firebird, illustrated by Christopher Myers and written by Misty Copeland, received the Coretta Scott King (Illustrator) Book Award. The Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Author Award went to When I Was the Greatest, by Jason Reynolds. The Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement was presented to Deborah D. Taylor, coordinator of School and Student Services at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland. In her 40-year career as a Young Adult Librarian, university instructor, and leader in national associations, Deborah Taylor has effectively introduced young people and professional colleagues to the outstanding work of African-American authors. The honor books as well as the other award books can be found on the ALA website, www.ala.org. |

First Grade Readers’ Rally
The first graders are coming! Area schools are invited to bring their first graders to the library for a special program celebrating the momentous achievement of learning to read. Marian Rafal, head of Youth Services, has the children laughing out loud while thinking seriously about the significance of being literate! Youth Services librarians present a couple of skits based on children’s books, and the first graders leave with some library information and a new book to keep. Their teachers are also applauded for their role in teaching the children to read. |
