Carol Zeiss Sports Optics renews sponsorship of Cornell Lab programs.

ZEISS Continues Sponsorship of
Cornell Lab of Ornithology Programs

For release: February 26, 2015

Ithaca, NY--Carl Zeiss Sports Optics, the world's leading manufacturer of high performance sports optics for birders and nature enthusiasts, is continuing its partnership with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology through collaboration on several key projects.

ZEISS will continue to serve as the lead page sponsor of eBird, a real-time, online checklist program. eBird has revolutionized the way that the birding community reports and accesses information about birds. Launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird provides rich data sources for basic information on bird abundance and distribution at a variety of spatial and temporal scales.

"Conserving birds requires understanding what happens across their entire lives," says eBird leader Chris Wood. "ZEISS's contributions are helping eBird engage and build a birding community throughout the Americas that is committed to helping build this understanding."

Part of the continued collaboration will be to recognize the ZEISS eBirder of the Month, each of whom is awarded the ZEISS 8x42 Conquest HD binocular for their contributions to eBird.

The Lab will also host the Young Birder’s event  July 16-19, 2015, in Ithaca, New York, with ZEISS as a lead sponsor. The Young Birders Event aims to bring together teenagers (students who will be sophomores, juniors and seniors) with a passion for birds who are interested in pursuing a career with birds. The participants will meet people who have successful careers that involve birds in a variety of ways from ornithological researchers to tour leaders, to audio specialists and computer scientists.

Interested participants should fill out the application form and return it by April 1, 2015. Sixteen young birders will be selected and notified in mid-April. Please share this information with any young birders you know!

The Young Birder’s Event will feature:
  • two days of field trip presentations by Cornell Lab  staff including professors, researchers, and students who will share various ways to incorporate birds into a career
  • eBird and field notes workshop
  • sound recording workshop
  • tour of the Cornell Lab including the Macaulay Library and Museum of Vertebrates
  • dinner with Cornell Lab directors and staff
ZEISS will also be providing binoculars to be used as awards for contests run by various projects at the Lab.
