Welcome to the Genesis Leeds Newsletter!
We've had a very busy couple of months here at Genesis. As some of you may know we have had our inspirational No Longer Invisible Booklets printed and launched. Our service users here at Genesis are so proud of it, and we hope that the booklet will offer motivation and inspiration to those who read it.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Calls9, Broadgate Leeds, and Oldfield Light, Sound and Vision for the giving their time and efforts to organising the 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' Fundraiser on 12th February, which was enjoyed by all and raised awareness and funds for the work we do.
We are continuously so grateful to our supporters, and could not do the work we do without you all. So thank you!

One Billion Rising
Genesis, along with 7 other charities supported the VDay event held in Morley Town Hall on Feb 15th to raise funds and awareness as part of the global campaign against violence against women One Billion Rising. Each charity spoke about the importance of their work and the need to have greater support for women that are subject to violence while there were music, dance and poetry performances throughout the afternoon, and funds were raised through raffle and sale of a CD of the performing artists which were shared across the participating charities.

An Update from the Lionesses:
The lionesses spent time contributing their poems, words and pictures on the theme 'Stop Violence against women and girls' to a booklet that was distributed at V-Day. The music and dance event has been put on by One Billion Rising, and is to celebrate and support local charities (including Genesis) that work to end violence against women and girls.
The lionesses is our ex-service user group that gives former female victims of CSE a voice in policy on CSE in Leeds and the development of services, increases their confidence and self esteem, develops their skills such as advocacy, presentation & communication skills and reduces social isolation.

Violence Against Sex Workers: An Executive Summary
Leeds Social Sciences Institute at the University of Leeds funded a six week placement to analyse the reports received by NUM from July 2012 to July 2014. This was carried out by Laura Connelly, a Phd student at Leeds. The executive summary is available here: http://yaswc.org.uk/publications/
National Ugly Mugs (NUM), managed by the UK Network of Sex Work Projects (UKNSWP), is a pioneering and innovative project which provides a third-party reporting mechanism for sex workers throughout the UK who are often targeted by dangerous offenders but are frequently unwilling to report these incidents to the police.

A Bit about Basis
Basis is the social enterprise linked to Genesis that raises awareness with young people to prevent their involvement in CSE. Basis also provides training, research and consultancy for professionals and organisations in the main areas in which Genesis frontline workers specialise: working with young people at risk of exploitation and working with sex workers as well on related social issues, while generating additional funds for Genesis.

West Yorkshire PCC Fund Genesis to Help victims of CSE
In January we were pleased to learn that we were successful in obtaining funding in the 4th Round of the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioners Safer Communities Fund. this will support the work of our young persons team in their work to support girls at risk of and experiencing CSE. This will allow us to continue to fund our part time Child Sexual Exploitation Worker for another six months.

No Longer Invisible: Our Journey on the Road to Recovery
Our Adult Outreach Worker, Emily Turner has written a blog about creating No Longer Invisible booklets.
'Many of the sex working women at Genesis want to tell their story, from their own point of view. They want to bust the myths around sex work, and be seen as something other than a sex worker. Some have been through so much to lead them into drug and alcohol misuse, and they want to talk about their journey through recovery and more importantly, inspire others and offer them hope through their own recovery....'

UKNSWP - Policy, Policing and Protection Conference - Monday 2nd March
This will bring together the expert practitioners and academics in the field as well as sex workers and activists to discuss the different legal frameworks and how they impact on both sex worker rights and safety, policing and the delivery of services supporting sex workers. In addition to many others, Rosie Campbell, our CEO will be talking about “The impact of changing policing priorities on sex workers in Leeds.â€
