Greetings from the CTL!

I hope your semester is going smoothly. I know this is a busy time of year, so I tried to keep this newsletter short and sweet! This month's newsletter includes information about student support resources (for both you and your students), an upcoming CTL workshop, and an introduction to the work of your fellow adjunct, Tracy Sunderland.

While I am sure your time on and off campus is limited, I would love the chance to talk with you about your experience as an adjunct at Boise State, and/or to consult with you about teaching practices you can use in your classes. If you would like to meet, please feel free to email me at teresafocarile@boisestate.edu to set up a time. I look forward to getting to know you and your work
!

Upcoming Workshop

On April 3 at 10:30 AM the CTL will host a workshop entitled "The Seven Principles of Effective Education - How Many Do You Use?"

This
workshop will explore the "Seven Principles of Effective (Undergraduate) Education" (Chickering and Gamson, 1987), the core elements of effective instruction. This workshop could be very helpful for new and experienced adjuncts, as a way to learn/be reminded about effective teaching practices. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of your favorite syllabus in order to identify ways to incorporate the Seven Principles in your teaching. Register for the workshop here: http://atapps.boisestate.edu/workshops/details.asp?1736

Adjunct Spotlight: Tracy Sunderland

Tracy Sunderland is a professional actor, writer and director who has taught in Boise State's Theatre Arts Department since 1998. This spring Tracy performs in a theatrical piece she created and directed for Boise Contemporary Theater,
SuperSecretSiteSpecificSomething (S5). S5 is a nontraditional performance piece in a nontraditional setting(s), an offbeat immersion where the audience will be asked to promenade through spaces and down streets. They'll follow characters who are attempting to unpack their memories, who are remembering their pasts, who are trying to rediscover the joy in their lives -- perhaps the audience will even get to choose which story or character they'd like to follow. The attempt is to create a fun, unique, weird and first-hand experience for audiences (and, yes, there will be a bit of walking).

Tracy brings her experience as a working artist to the classroom, where she teaches Acting, Introduction to Theatre and Cinema History. "I share with my students my own challenges as an artist. They're aware that I'm out there, trying to make things, that I'm in the same boat as they are. This helps bond us, I think; inspires them to learn along with me rather than my leading them all the time."

The work of adjuncts - both on and off campus - will be highlighted in this newsletter each month. If you would like to share with your fellow adjuncts your thoughts about the expertise you bring to your students, please let me know!
