Grammy Time!

The new year has begun and it’s already time for the Grammys again!?! Before we dive headlong into spring, let’s slow down just a little to offer a hearty congratulations to a few of the folks that keep A Train going strong - our artists that have been nominated for an award at the 57th Grammy Awards.  Congratulations to David Darling (Best New Age Album), R. Carlos Nakai and Peter Kater (Best New Age Album) and Lila Downs (Best Latin Pop Album).

In 2015, Ten time Grammy nominee/multi-platinum selling pianist Peter Kater brings us Etheria – a well received addition to his ubiquitous Elements Series on the Real Music label.  And multi-Grammy nominee, and the world's premier Native American flutist, R. Carlos Nakai is celebrating the new year with a Deluxe Edition of his platinum certified Canyon Trilogy. Look for a number of classic Nakai remasters to follow as part of Canyon Records Definitive Remaster Series.  See R. Carlos Nakai and Peter Kater perform together - live in concert

Lila Downs had a whirlwind year in 2014 that began with her collaboration with Carlos Santana and closed with a new release on top ten Latin lists for Billboard Magazine  (Best Latin Albums of the Year) and NBC News Latino, not to mention a Latin Grammy Award… and a Grammy Nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. Check out one of our favorite albums from Cloud People Music: Lila Downs Y La Misteriosa  En Paris - Live A FIP in our buried treasure feature.

Henry Kaiser at The Stone

Guitarist Henry Kaiser will play a residency gig at The Stone in NYC February 3 - 8, 2015. The run at The Stone includes collaborations with such NYC luminaries as Samuel R. Delany, Bill Laswell, John Zorn, Lukas Ligeti, and Brandon Ross. It is very rare for Kaiser to play in NYC and this Stone run celebrates the release of his collaborative release with Scott Amendola,  Leaps (See dates in our tour section and read about the album in our new releases).

Saying Farewell to the Talented Jeff Golub

Jeff Golub has said, “There’s only two kinds of music: the kind that’s from the heart and the kind that’s not.”  Jeff certainly lived his life “from the heart,” and was always grateful for his friends, family, colleagues and his music.  We wish a fond farewell to our friend Jeffrey Golub, jazz, blues and rock guitarist, husband and father of two, who passed away peacefully on January 1, 2015 at his home in New York City.

NEW RELEASES

Ray Obiedo
There Goes That

(Rhythmus Records)

Amazon Charts:

#1 in Latin Jazz

#1 in Smooth Jazz

#1 in Jazz Fusion

#317 in all music

The 7th release by Bay Area guitarist/composer Ray Obiedo There Goes That on Rhythmus Records is a another collection of original compositions fused with Latin Jazz, Funk and Brazilian styled rhythms. His eclectic groove oriented compositions never stray far from his love of R&B. The melodies are simply stated and gracefully glide over jazz influenced chord structures.

Obiedo enlisted some of the music industries top musicians and longtime cohorts for the project. Percussionist Sheila E, drummer Peter Michael Escovedo, steel pan master Andy Narell, trumpeter Michael “Patches” Stewart and Tower of Power drummer David Garibaldi, all make brief appearances. Santana members David K. Mathews, Karl Perazzo, Jeff Cressman and Bill Ortiz contribute their expertise.

Playing soprano sax on two tracks, “Werewolf” and “Four Square”, is Miles Davis alumni Kenny Garrett. “There Goes That” also features Norbert Stachel, Elena Ayodele Pinderhughes, Marc & Paul van Wageningen, Roger Glenn, Michael Spiro, Peter Horvath, Stefen Kuehn and Sandy Cressman. Ray has 5 previous releases on the Windham Hill jazz label; this is his first on his own Oakland based Rhythmus Records label. The music on “There Goes That” is a highly energized and hypnotically rhythmic soundscape revealing all the passion, flavor, color and style of the San Francisco Bay Area which conceived, nourished and inspired Obiedo’s latest musical venture.

Scott Amendola |
Henry Kaiser
Leaps

(Fractal Music)

"Leaps featur[es] Scott Amendola on drums and percussion and Henry Kaiser on guitars. Bay area drummer, Scott Amendola is a longtime member of the Nels Cline Singers and performs/records with Larry Ochs, Charlie Hunter & Ben Goldberg plus having several discs out as a leader. West Coast guitar great, Henry Kaiser, keeps busy by playing in a wide variety of contexts: solos, duos, trios and bands of different sizes. Mr. Kaiser has recorded a number of duos, most often with fellow guitarists like: Derek Bailey, Eugene Chadbourne and Fred Frith, but rarely in a duo with a drummer. Each piece here is very different and shows many sides to these two gifted improvisers. The title piece is first and it is an epic length workout which goes throughout a number of different sections, moods or scenes. From rip-roaring intensity to those Dead-like space jams. It all fits together like fascinating cryptic mosaic or puzzle which unfolds as it evolves. This disc is around 75 minutes long and takes us on a fabulous journey throughout". - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

New From BAG Productions

Ben Goldberg
Orphic Machine

(BAG Productions)

On his new album, Orphic Machine, clarinetist/composer Ben Goldberg creates his most beautiful and lyrical music to date. Goldberg’s songs, brought to exquisite life by vocalist Carla Kihlstedt, derive lyrics from an unlikely source: not poetry, but a book on “speculative poetics” by Goldberg’s former professor and MacArthur Fellow Allen Grossman.

Three years in the making, this is Goldberg’s most ambitious project, featuring his closest collaborators: Kihlstedt, his bandmate in Tin Hat; guitarist Nels Cline of Wilco, saxophonist Rob Sudduth and drummer Ches Smith, who all play in Goldberg’s quintet Unfold Ordinary Mind; trumpeter Ron Miles; pianist Myra Melford; bassist Greg Cohen; and vibraphonist Kenny Wollesen, from Goldberg’s ground-breaking New Klezmer Trio.

"Goldberg has created a brilliant homage to Grossman with this sequence of musical settings of his teacher's witty thoughts on poetics... The result is a species of art song, but that term doesn't capture this music's wildly fetching mix of jazz, folk, soul, cabaret, blues  and tango". (4.5 Stars) - Downbeat (Click for full article)

R. Carlos Nakai
Canyon Trilogy - Deluxe Platinum Edition

(Canyon Records)

Multi-Grammy nominee, and the world's premier Native American flutist, R. Carlos Nakai creates the sound of the cedar flute echoing in the canyons and valleys of the vast Southwest. Soothing the spirit and calming the mind, this landmark collection carries the listener to the limitless realms of the imagination.

Nakai's ethereal music has touched people across the globe. With over a million copies sold, Canyon Trilogy received the first platinum certification for Native American music. This Deluxe Platinum Edition contains the original Canyon Trilogy album, fully re-mastered plus 5 never-before-heard Nakai songs for solo cedar flute that expand upon the legacy of this timeless classic. Inspired by the ancient homes of the Native peoples of the southwest, Nakai utilizes digital delay to emulate the natural echo and resonance of the flute echoing in a canyon. The result is a big peaceful and relaxing atmosphere that has made Canyon Trilogy the ideal musical companion for yoga, body work, massage, meditation, and healing.

R. Carlos Nakai
Earth Spirit - Canyon Records Definitive Remaster

(Canyon Records)

"R. Carlos Nakai has been at the forefront of Native American artists since the mid to late '80s. On Earth Spirit, his acoustic reveries are direct and true," says Jim Brenholts of All Music Guide. "Each of the 15 compositions comes from Nakai's heart and goes to listeners' hearts...This is an outstanding CD from a soulful man."

Earth Spirit was the first Native American recording to be certified Gold by the RIAA  (followed by Nakai's Canyon Trilogy) and has been reissued here as part of Canyon Records Definitive Remaster series - which also includes Nakai classics Mythic Dreamer, Emergence, Journeys, Changes, Sanctuary and Talisman as well as Kelvin Mockingbird's Sacred Fire and Robert Tree Cody's Dreams from the Grandfather.

New From Crammed

Taraf de Haïdouks
Of Lovers, Gamblers and Parachute Skirts

(Crammed Discs)

"The world’s most celebrated Gypsy band returns. Formed in the Romanian village of Clejani 25 years ago, Taraf de Haidouks became famous for their frantic, rapid-fire blend of violins, accordions, flute and xylophone-like cymbalum, winning awards and a celebrity following led by Johnny Depp. The deaths of several founding members led to an uncertain period for the band, who last recorded four years ago with Macedonia’s Kocani Orkestar. Now they have returned to their early influences, and done so in style. The singers here include the gutsy Viorica Rudareasa, who sang with Taraf in the late 90s. But what makes the set special are the swirling, furious instrumental pieces like 'Din Caval Moldoveneasca', driven on by original band members Marius on accordion, Caliu on violin and Ionica on cymbalum. Welcome back." - The Guardian

Axel Krygier
Hombre de Piedra

(Crammed Discs)

Hombre de piedra is the fifth album by multi-talented artist Axel Krygier, a central figure in the alternative music scene in Argentina, where he's considered as a forerunner of  Digital Cumbia (among other things). As a multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer, producer, songwriter, activist and iconoclast, Krygier has already written music for many feature films, albums, plays and dance performances. It should also be noted that Axel designs his own record sleeves and directs his own music videos.

"Axel Krygier is undoubtedly the most remarkable personality in the current Argentinian scene. He effortlessly switches between the zany, the profound and the virtuosic, he’s well able to go from a joropo chant from Colombia to a trumpet improv… Probably one of the most important Latin-American producers of the decade". - World Sound

Joshua Bruneau Septet

Bright Idea

(Cellar Live Records)

"Bruneau, is one of the best jazz trumpet talents to emerge in recent years. The New York-based trumpeter and flugelhorn player is a Hartt School of Music graduate who studied with jazz master Jackie McLean. Bruneau has recorded with Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, and Larry Willis, and toured extensively with trombone great Curtis Fuller. Bright Idea, recorded live at Smalls Jazz Club in New York City in March 2014, is a hard swinging session featuring the young trumpeter’s fluid lines and robust tone. We’ll be hearing much more from Bruneau in the near future.

It’s an added bonus that Steve Davis, one of the jazz world’s leading trombonists and a Hartt faculty member... [is featured performer] on Bright Idea..."

- Cellar Jazz Society

Maureen Budway

Sweet Candor

(MCG Jazz)

"Maureen Budway [May 30, 1963 - Jan. 12, 2015] is one of the true gems of the Pittsburg music community bringing joy to audiences for over 30 years. This collection of songs represents Maureen's unique ability to perform in a variety of styles with authority, passion and a deep understanding of each genre.

From the Carmen McRae influenced 'Del  Sasser' to the Budway original ballad 'Lonely Cane,' Maureen conveys the message of the song in such a profound way, reaching into the depth of her very being. Maureen and her brother, pianist David Budway, have been performing together since childhood, and their ability to communicate musically is truly akin to thinking as one. This is powerfully apparent in the Americana Suite as they reach back into their childhood performing songs from the classic film Holiday Inn.

In True 'Mo' style, she came into the studio and recorded the record in two consecutive days of only 4 hour sessions. In this day and age of weeks of overdubs and multiple takes, this record represents a true artist's ability to sing a song the way it is meant to be song."  - Marty Ashby, MCG Jazz

Deuter

(New Earth Records)

Deuter revisits his classic Reiki Hands of Light (currently #1 New Age on Amazon) with Love!

"The loving touch of the human hand gives us the feeling of being cared for, the awareness of being appreciated, and the feeling of being secure and loved," says Deuter. "This music is designed to gently help this process by being a friendly energy in the background. It is a harmonious flow of sounds and melodies, compassionately supporting the act of calming and healing".

Kevin Kern
Always Near – A Romantic Collection

(Real Music)

"Always Near, the new album from Kevin Kern offers wistful waltzes, warm ballads, and sophisticated aires all in Kevin's memorable, smooth style. Kevin Kern is a veteran of ambient piano music with a dozen albums, multiple songbooks, and numerous contributions to other albums, but his focus on this recording is pure romance. This music touches the heart and builds glorious memories, all in the name of love." - ZoneMusicReporter

"A collection of fourteen of pianist/composer Kevin Kern’s most beautiful and romantic pieces. ...Some of his music sounds deceptively simple, but it takes a master to say so much with so little.” - MainlyPiano.com

Thierry David
Hypnosis

(Real Music)

Soft rhythmic patterns, recurrent loops and subliminal echoed notes capture the listener with the essence of sound. These effects gradually establish a magnetic and ecstatic ambiance that can lead listeners to explore and experience their own physical and mental sensations in this music-induced and pleasurable hypnotic state. ideal for day dreaming, exploration, relaxation.

Chosen by John Diliberto to be ((( Echoes ))) CD of the Month for October.

Eamonn Karran

Forgotten Road

(Real Music)

"Karran’s piano work here is delicate, strong, and always interesting — listeners will be set adrift on the compositions that begin his latest release, Forgotten Road... the deft hand of Karran makes it seem as if no time has passed, utilizing a large amount of open space to create something that will resound loudly with listeners long after the composition has ceased... Forgotten Road is a bright spot during this cold winter season." - NeuFutur

Liquid Mind
Relaxing Rain & Ocean Mixes

(Real Music)

"You don't often see Bernie Grundman in the credits for a new age record, but you don't often find one made by one of the cats behind "Max Headroom". Originally recorded as an antidote to the 20 hour days network TV can require, the series is now in it's 20th year and this set celebrates high spots from it's last decade by freshening up the mixes with nature sounds from various forms of water. It worked once before and it works again now. Refreshing stuff for tired ears as generated by a player that's certainly been there, done that and got the t-shirt. Newbies wondering how to fight off burn out ought to cock their ears in this direction." - Midwest Record

Liquid Mind (Chuck Wild) revisits some of his favorite tracks from previous albums, this time mixing with the cleansing, healing and comforting sounds of the rain and ocean.

Peter Kater
Elements Series: Etheria

(Real Music)

Ten time Grammy nominee/multi-platinum selling pianist/composer Peter Kater has been a leading innovator of contemporary instrumental music for over three decades. Grammy nominations include Elements Series: Fire.  Consistent with Peter’s great body of work, Etheria is both exquisitely delicate and majestically inspiring - suitable for relaxing or meditative pursuits, or just the sheer pleasure of listening.

"It is truly amazing that [Peter Kater] has been able to go in so many different musical directions and still maintain such a consistently high quality of work - Etheria is no exception. The music on this album ranges from ambient and, well, ethereal, to approaching a haunting jazz style... Etheria was worth the wait for the fifth element of the series and fits right in with the other four. Recommended!" - Vine Voice

El Diablitos
Come Hell or High Water

(Too Good)

With the signing of his El Diablitos project to Tommy Guerrero and Al Evers’ Too Good label, Tony rejoins his brother, reminiscent of the classic Free Beer days. Led by the two brothers, Free Beer gigged with DOA, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Bad Religion, the Dickies, and other three-chord heavyweights, releasing some songs on compilation records between 1981 and 1983. Following its release in Japan through a collaboration with Rush Productions and Space Shower, Too Good is thrilled to offer El Diablitos' Come Hell or High Water to the rest of the globe this coming April!

"El Diablitos is fronted by San Francisco's native son Tony Guerrero who absolutely shreds on guitar with a reverb-bathed Link Wray sound that has been cooked in the Latin infused cultural melting pot of 'The Bay'". - Chris King

Barbara Higbie - Scenes From Life
“You won't get pyrotechnics in Higbie's work, she's not the sort of person to score an Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, but instead—here underscored by strings by the acclaimed ex-Kronos cellist Joan Jeanrenaud and Aryeh Frankfurter (violin, viola, cello)—spunky or contemplative pastorales, classicalist-oriented ditties, comps with rag or Celtically influenced airs, and so on, everything very much agreeable to cinema and atmospherics”. - Acoustic Music

Jozef Van Wissem - It Is Time For You To Return
“He's been hailed by the New York Times, Vogue, and countless others for the way he draws from 17th century compositional practices to combine the classical with the contemporary—no small feat for a self-described ‘lute player with a punk rock attitude’… Echoing his past collaborations with the likes of Tilda Swinton and Keiji Haino, this album sees Jozef enlist the talents of Chilean filmmaker Domingo Garcia-Huidobro to handle electronic programming on several tracks, while Jim Jarmusch and Lebanese singer Yasmine Hamdan contribute vocals." – VICE.
