“Art songs at the New York Festival of Song are celebrated for the sensual pleasures they bring
but also for the improbably numerous ways in which they open out onto larger worlds of history, poetry, and biography, distant geographic landscapes and the veiled interior regions within.”
— The Boston Globe

From NYFOS Artistic Director Steven Blier:
“When I chose this season’s program of songs by Italians and Italian-Americans, I knew I’d need an especially gifted quartet of singers—rich voices, eloquent interpreters, stylish virtuosos, and snazzy purveyors of American vernacular. The cast I found exceeded my wildest dreams: four superb singers, each of whom thrilled me and brought tears to my eyes when we worked together last summer. Chelsea Morris, Julia Dawson, Alec Carlson, and Shea Owens will revel in the challenges of Catalani, Rossini, Corigliano, and Harry Warren, and I can’t wait for our audiences to hear them. We were also blessed with a superb pianist for this year’s team, the extremely precocious Christopher Reynolds—an elegant musician, a keen mind, and a generous heart.”
New York Festival of Song marks its seventh annual residency at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts with BEL CANTO/CAN BELTO, to be performed on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. at Merkin Concert Hall.

A preview performance will take place at the Caramoor Center in Katonah, NY on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at 4:00 p.m.

Five young artists will take the audience on an exploration of Italian song, from the lyricism of the Romantic era into the sophisticated tone poems of the verismo era, paired with a wide array of music by Italian-Americans. The program includes songs, arias, and ensemble pieces by Giuseppe Verdi, Gioacchino Rossini, Ildebrando PizzettiFerruccio BusoniAlfredo CatalaniJohn MustoJohn Corigliano, Dominick Argento, and Harry Warren (the composer of 42nd Street, born Salvatore Guaragna).

As part of the NYFOS Emerging Artists season and its commitment in training the next generation of vocalists, the concert features the members of Caramoor's 2015 Terrance W. Schwab Vocal Stars Program: soprano Chelsea Morris, mezzo-soprano Julia Dawson, tenor Alec Carlson, and baritone Shea Owens, as well as pianist Christopher Reynolds.

The young artists will also be joined by NYFOS artistic director Steven Blier and associate artistic director Michael Barrett on piano.

About the Terrance W. Schwab Vocal Rising Stars
The identification and development of young musical talent has long been central to Caramoor's mission. The Vocal Rising Stars, established in 2009 under the artistic leadership of Caramoor’s former Executive Director, Michael Barrett, and NYFOS Artistic Director, Steven Blier, is an intensive program centered on the art of song and vocal chamber music. Singers at the beginning professional level are invited to Caramoor for a weeklong residency that offers daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops with mentors.

The Vocal Rising Stars program has a specialized focus on providing singers with an opportunity to form collaborative partnerships with one another, the Caramoor staff, and the coach/accompanists who also participate in the residency. In the program, the work leading up to a performance is of equal if not greater importance than the concert itself and will have a lasting impact on the growth and development of young artists. Past graduates of this program—including Joélle Harvey, Paul Appleby, John Brancy, Julia Bullock, Tobias Greenhalgh, Theo Lebow, Carlton Ford, Andrew Owens, Corinne Winters, and Sarah Larsen—are now enjoying busy international careers.

NYFOS MAINSTAGE

The original thematic song party

"New York Festival of Song is the most important nucleus of contemporary song in the world."
— Ned Rorem
Steven Blier and Michael Barrett have hosted New York Festival of Song's signature series since founding NYFOS in 1988. Blier is a national treasure, adored for his boundless knowledge of song, smart and funny stage commentary, meticulously researched program notes, and gift for imparting his passion to the singers he coaches. Barrett—the perfect foil for Blier—is a sublime and suave musician, the mastermind of Caramoor (2003-2012) and the Moab Music Festival (1992-today). These two have pioneered and explored the art of the thematic song recital. Their programs draw from repertoire across musical genres and styles; they delight in unearthing rarely heard songs, and programming familiar works in surprising contexts. Audiences come away inspired, smiling, lighter on their feet. "An evening of transporting theatre—with music." (The New York Times)

ABOUT NYFOS

“People have a primal need to be sung to and communicated with through song. The essential core of truth in each song—that part where you feel ‘that's me, I've been there’—that’s what we’re always looking for.” — Steven Blier

Now in its 27th season, NEW YORK FESTIVAL OF SONG (NYFOS) is dedicated to creating intimate song concerts of great beauty and originality. Weaving music, poetry, history and humor into evenings of compelling theater, NYFOS fosters community among artists and audiences. Each program entertains and educates in equal measure.

Founded by pianists Michael Barrett and Steven Blier in 1988, NYFOS continues to produce NYFOS MAINSTAGE, its series of thematic song programs, drawing together rarely-heard songs of all kinds, overriding traditional distinctions between high and low performance genres, exploring the character and language of other cultures, and the personal voices of song composers and lyricists.

Since its founding, NYFOS has particularly celebrated American song. Among the many highlights is the double bill of one-act comic operas, Bastianello and Lucrezia, by John Musto and William Bolcom, both with libretti by Mark Campbell, commissioned and premiered by NYFOS in 2008 and recorded on Bridge Records. In addition to Bastianello and Lucrezia and the 2008 Bridge Records release of Spanish Love Songs with Joseph Kaiser and the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, NYFOS has produced five recordings on the Koch label, including a Grammy Award-winning disc of Bernstein’s Arias and Barcarolles, and the Grammy-nominated recording of Ned Rorem’s Evidence of Things Not Seen (also a NYFOS commission) on New World Records. Its recently released CD on the GPR label, Canción amorosa, focuses on Spanish song—Basque, Catalan, Castilian, and Sephardic—with soprano Corinne Winters accompanied by Steven Blier.

In November 2010, NYFOS premiered NYFOS NEXT, a series for new songs, hosted by guest composers in intimate venues. This season the series returns as a mini-festival during the month of February 2015 with all concerts presented at OPERA America’s National Opera Center. In the fall of 2014, NYFOS officially introduced its unamplified cabaret series NYFOS AFTER HOURS at HENRY's Restaurant on the Upper West Side, drawing full houses and superlative voices accompanied by Blier at the piano.

NYFOS is passionate about nurturing the artistry and careers of young singers, and through its NYFOS EMERGING ARTISTS program has developed professional training residencies around the country, including The Juilliard School’s Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts (now in its 10th year); Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts (its 7th year in March 2015); San Francisco Opera Center (over 15 years as of March 2014); Glimmerglass Opera (2008–2010); and its newest project, NYFOS@North Fork in Orient, NY (2 years).

NYFOS’s concert series, touring programs, radio broadcasts, recordings, and educational activities continue to spark new interest in the creative possibilities of the song program, and have inspired the creation of thematic vocal series around the world.
