This competition that encourages the singing of gurbani kirtan incorporating traditional elements, and the use of traditional Sikh instruments like dilruba, taus, saranda, rabab, jori and other instruments, is held with rigorous standards. Interested participants are urged to form jathas and begin preparations as early as possible. Participants may compete in four age groups: 7-10 years, 11-14 yrs, 15-18 yrs and 19-25 yrs (age on Dec 31, 2014). A jatha must have a minimum of three participants-- two vocalists and one percussionist, and a maximum of 8 participants. A younger child may join an older age group, but an older child may not join a younger group.
