15 Hair Facts You Probably
Didn't Know Before
Impress your stylist the next time you’re at the hair salon. Here are 15 facts about hair that would probably surprise the average human being. Read up! (and you’re welcome for the conversation starters)
1. Protect and Serve
Your hair, skin and nails are all made up of Keratin, a family of fibrous structural proteins.
2. Through Thick and Thin
A dot from your pencil is almost the same diameter as your hair.
3. That’s a Long Walk
Every strand of hair grows about a half inch per month. Add that all together and you could be looking at 20,000 worth of steps to reach the end of your hair.
4. Throw Me a Bone
Bone marrow is the fastest growing tissue followed by hair.
5. One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure
The absorbent properties in your hair make it a great sponge for oil. Some salons send their “waste” to help clean up oil spills.
6. And That Brings Us To…
A single strand of hair can hold its own weight in water. Can anyone guess that weight?
7. Before You Start Thinking About Shaving Your Head
On average, a fresh strand of hair will take seven years to grow down to your waist. That includes regular trims.
8. The Building Blocks of Hair
Cysteine creates the 3D shape of a hair follicle. Different textures of hair can have a different shape.
9. When I Was Your Age, My Hair Grew 3 Inches in One Day!
As you get older, your hair growth begins to slow down, but it won’t stop completely.
10. Not to be a Downer or Anything, But…
Hair also becomes more dry as you age, so you have to keep it nourished.
11. Guess The Number
On average, you have between 100,000 to 150,000 strands of hair growing on your head. That’s a lot!
12. It’s Not Grey Hair, It’s Wisdom Highlights
Your stressful day may have produced a new grey hair, but you won’t see it for at least 13 days.
13. Thank Your Lucky Stars
You hair protects you from the heat in the Summer and the cold in the Winter.
14. Is it Time For a Trim, Yet?
Trichoptilosis is the scientific name for split ends. Sounds Scary!
15. Carbon is Everywhere
If you have dark hair, you have more carbon in your strands.

History of Hair
the Ancient Civilizations
The East
In the Vedic period (1700-1100BCE) they arranged that Indians should shave the whole head, leaving a lock of hair at the back or at the side, similar to young Egyptians, allowing "God to pull people into heaven" .This kind of hair cut was limited to people with high social positions over time, whilst women were to use head pieces with gems and jewels in the forehead. The Greek culture changed all this as Buddha was shown with curly hair in the style of a bun, atop his head. In the period between 320 -550 women’s hair was generally cut short and they would use longer hair to create a style, if their hair was tied it was in a bun to the side of their head or near the nape of her neck.
Men would also have long shoulder-length hair that was often braided. Since the 6th Century, in India amongst the Muslim community the hair was concealed in public for both men and women. Men would wear a turban or fez. Women would wear a traditional veil. In the 7th century, several sultans from Damascus, Persia and Afghanistan started to invade India, which caused a blend of Muslim and Indian costumes. Their hairstyle did not change much as most of the women’s hair was black, long, with braids or tied in chignons at the nape.

Curly Girl (and Guy) Commandments
1. Thou shalt not brush thy curls.
Make sure you make friends with the wide-toothed comb to keep curls bouncy and free of breakage. Give them an extra dose of moisture, which strengthens and protects hair from heat damage.
2. Thou shalt not abuse the heat.
Diffusing your curls can be great, but if you’re hoping to reap the benefits of that second-day look and prevent heat damage, use a curl activator, which will wake up that bedhead and bring some bounce back to curls.
3. Thou shalt not touch too much.
If you're having a problem with extra frizzy curls, keep your hands off your mane. Using the curl forming cream or lotion will also help maintain smooth, soft and bouncy curls, free of frizz too.
4. Thou shalt use a conditioning shampoo.
Give curls the extra moisture they crave with a curl cleansing cream, designed to smooth, fortify and hydrate curls before you even put in products.
5. Thou shalt embrace the light.
If your curls are looking a little lacklustre and dull, add some dimension and shine with a non-greasy, frizz-fighting hair product, which will help define curls without weighing them down, while locking in hydration.

Got Dandruff?
It’s easy to spot – the white, oily looking flakes of dead skin that dot your hair and shoulders and contribute to an itchy scalp. It’s a common scalp condition that plagues teens, adults and worsens during the fall and winter, which is right around the corner.
It’s an embarrassing look – but the good news is that dandruff usually can be controlled. According to Mayo Clinic, “Mild cases of dandruff may need nothing more than daily shampooing with a gentle cleanser. More stubborn cases on dandruff often respond to medicated shampoos.”
There are lots of great shampoos out there to help control dandruff. Most professional or salon brands carry an anti-dandruff shampoo and are usually better than using an over-the-counter drugstore shampoo.
Sometimes what you think is dandruff might just be product build up and something as simple as shampooing your hair more often might resolve the issue.
If you are still scratching your head after several weeks of dandruff shampoos, or if your scalp becomes red or swollen, then you need to see a doctor or dermatologist.
With dandruff affecting such a large amount of people, AG Hair and MODERN Salon gathered together these need-to-know tips about dandruff:
#1: 1 in 3 people suffer from dandruff, more commonly in men.
#2: Why men? Men have larger oil producing glands on their scalp and testosterone increases sebum (oil) production.
#3: Dry skin does not cause dandruff. Dandruff is caused by yeast that feeds on excess sebum (oil) which increases the rate of natural skin shedding.
#4. Dandruff affects people of all ages.
#5. A type of dandruff can affect babies – it’s commonly called cradle cap. This can cause a scaly, crusty scalp and can occur anytime during infancy. According to Mayo Clinic, “Although it’s alarming for parents, cradle cap isn’t dangerous and usually clears up on its own by the time a baby is 3-years-old.”
#6. UV rays counteract the effects of dandruff-causing yeast-making it more prominent in winter and early spring.
#7. Leaving anti-dandruff treatment shampoo on for at least 3 minutes is proven to be most effective.
#8. Dandruff is NOT contagious.
#9 According to Mayo Clinic, “for reasons that aren’t clear, adults with neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, are more likely to develop seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. So are people with HIV infection and those recovering from stressful conditions, particularly heart attack and stroke, and those with compromised immune systems.
#10. A poor diet can contribute to dandruff. If your diet lacks foods high in zinc, B vitamins or certain types of fats, you may be more likely to develop dandruff.
